Toronto rlcs

I'm up in Toronto for a week, and find the rlcs puzzling. I've never been ticketed, so don't expect it this time either (3 recent trips over 2 yrs).

Each time I approach a rlc intersection, I don't see 4 cams. Sometimes I see only 1, and it's the old box style that reminds me of the 35mm days. Wonder what gives...I even saw someone stop over the line, and take a right on red, no flash? I have to admit, the rights on red still make me uncomfortable--not if traffic is diverted around the intersection, but an actual right on red...

could be a ghost camera

Its possible that its only a camera housing. Some places move cameras around. Its like putting up a phony surveilance camera or security
sign.

Cameras aren't necessarily installed on all four corners.

They only put them on the bad corners

You will also find they usually only put them on the 1 or 2 bad sides where people run the lights the most... but never assume the box is empty because the fine isn't cheap if you do get one! I do agree with my fellow Canadian GPS Geek they are not all loaded but not today but could be tomorrow so drive at your own risk!

Please user red light

Please user red light cameras POI file. It is very helpful. It has given me peace of mind driving everywhere. It is quite accurate as well. These cameras I always find only on one side of the intersection every where, US and Canada.

In Philadelphia PA every single RLC intersection is a 4 way deal, all four directions have a camera, the only exception is where there is a one way street, in that case there are only cameras facing the direction of the traffic flow.

That's why I'm unsure....there is clearly a sign. Then I look over my right shoulder, and don't see anything. And I may only see one box at another part of the intersection. I'm used to all four directions being covered.

I'm 99% sure I haven't even come close to running a light, so my question is more out of curiosity for anyone who lives up here...

man for a city of this size (they could host the Olympics)

$325 fine, and this hasn't been updated in 4 years. Clear as mud.

I will say, I don't see people running lights, anywhere. But remember what you've started with, a society who stops for a single pedestrian crossing the road. Pedestrians, on the other hand, cross at designated walks. Nah, we can't do this in the States, it's just not possible! lol

~snip~

Maybe it's on the left? There are a few here that are in a center medial area because that would give the camera the best view of the rear plate.

It really seems that when there is a sign, there is at least one camera, and often, only one?

I just found out they are strict with hands free. $490 fine, and they are using technology to bust people holding any type of electronic device. This is Ontario. But I googled and saw that cops have a lens that allows them to look as far as 1 km (.62 mile)? And bust distracted driving...ouch. Then, if you plead not guilty, it pretty much becomes a $1,000 fine that you must pay, from what I'm told...

The cops are also taking to

The cops are also taking to riding around in street cars and buses. This gives them a better vantage point and they just radio to a squad car that is following. This is a story from our local paper

Seems they are strict period ...

"As of January 1, 2010 the set fine for running a red light detected by a camera system was increased to $260, plus a $60 victim surcharge and a $5 court cost. The total payable is now $325. Prior to this increase, the set fine was $155, plus a $35 victim surcharge, for a total payable of $180. Demerit points are not issued with violations detected by the red light camera system."

Soberbyker, thanks for the update and good to know.

I put in the POIs for red

I put in the POIs for red light cameras but rarely see any action on them in Toronto. Even where I live outside of GTA - have I seen any light/activity on them. I do believe it is a cloak and shadow game.

not sure

if this is the pattern, but when I see a rlc sign, it seems there is only one camera at the given intersection. I have never seen two but this is not a scientific study....

I also observed some cars rolling a right on red, at a rlc intersection, but I did not see any camera looking in our direction, instead, it was looking at traffic that they would be merging with.

All in all, I do not observe people talking on the cell like in the USA, and I generally do not see cars running lights.

I think if the fine is severe enough, $500-$1000, behavior changes, camera or not....
