Local Weirdness

Big evacuation last night from Oroville Dam issue. Main spillway broke a few days ago. Not a big deal but they slowed water release as it was tearing things up pretty badly. Yesterday the lake filled for the first time ever and water started going over the emergency spillway. They had cleared trees and such from below it in case that happened but didn't expect a large boil to develop below the thing. The didn't know if it would hold or not so they issued mandatory evacuation orders for the town and surrounding areas.

Of course they then said "screw the main spillway and downstream issues" and pushed the outflow there to twice what was coming into the lake. Later on the lake went down low enough to stop going over the emergency spillway but people are still under mandatory evacuation.

I don't anticipate any problem from a breach of the spillway (if it went then a 30' wall of water would pour out) but I'm guessing that idiots in a panic will have caused traffic accidents so that there will still be injuries from this incident. I also heard early last night that 3 stores (so far) had been looted. I think they were liquor stores.

I feel bad for the folks who are now sleeping in the high school and church on this end of town and at the fairgrounds, some churches, and other places across town from us. Lots of others went other places.

I am sure it is not easy to have to leave quickly and stay in a place for safety but hopefully everyone will have homes to go back to and hopefully everyone stays safe.
