How Many Garmin Friction Mounts Are There?

When I bought me first Garmin StreetPilot years ago, it came with a portable friction mount like this: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/pn/010-10908-02

Then, somewhat more recently, I recall hearing that a newer style was out:
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/pn/010-11280-02

Now, on Ebay, I see this style:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/222379199232?_trksid=p2055119.m1438....

Is the one on the Ebay listing a genuine OEM Garmin friction mount? If so, is it still available or has it been discontinued?

Newer Mount Versus Bean Bag

I personally own the Bean Bag Mount and I am satisfied with it.
I see the newer model has the ability to fold up for easier storage. Read the reviews at Amazon and decide for yourself what would be more practical for you.

I have the bean bag style

I have the bean bag style and I like it. Works well, but make sure you get the genuine Garmin one and not a 3rd party or knockoff. I compared both and Garmin is much more fitting/flexible, the knockoff/3rd party was more inflexible, like it was used with larger filling inside or too much.

I as well use the bean bag

I as well use the bean bag mount. It works very well.

I have both

I have an original Bean Bag Mount as well as the new Friction Mount. I still prefer the old Bean Bag Mount.

Garmin mounts

Jim, the ebay listing certainly looks like it'd be a genuine Garmin item but for the life of me, I've never seen anything from Garmin like that. The hard plastic portion is familiar but the "rubber tripod" is odd.

I've tried the bean bag and the newer friction mount and with a Subaru Forester, the newer friction mount works best by far.

Like the air vent mounts, how good a person feels a friction mount is depends very much on the primary vehicle it'll be used in.

Never seen

that ebay garmin mount but if you do a search for "garmin 0101061300" you'll find that mount listed at various places (mostly no longer sold).

Looks like that peddle friction mount was for the C310/C320/C330/C340 line of GPS units.

I've got the Garmin Friction mount (https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/pn/010-11280-02) and it works fine. Like that I can mold it to the dash. Just have to figure out a way to clean the fiction pad since its slowly getting gummed up with dirt/particles. Bought it years ago for something like $10 online at MacMall I think (during a deal of the day type special).

Amazon

Amazon is a great place to get these things and if you are lucky, you may even find them on sale. I have three of these things and they all work great in any of my vehicles. (I have one for each of my GPS's because I don't like switching the mounts back and forth.) If you keep switching the balls out, it seems that they start to loosen up somewhat. So, I just buy an extra beanbag and that takes care of the switching part.

Same Mount As Garmin At Amazon

That's the same model (010-11280-02) being sold at Amazon for $14.07, much cheaper than the $25.00 Garmin is asking.

I did read in the Amazon reviews regarding your issue with the mount gumming up the dashboard.

See the the complaint:
" There are a lot of good things to say about this Garmin mount, however, there is one bad thing and it's enough for a 1 star review... The sticky part of the underside that touches the dash has permanently left marks on my dash after only one day on my dash and not in hot weather. Everywhere you see a darker smudge is a place where the mount touched the dash. So far, I haven't found a way to fix the issue, despite cleaning with ArmorAll and other products as well, so buyer beware, it may discolor your dash!!! Not worth the risk, as far as I'm concerned. I am extremely upset about this. Please don't learn the hard way, like I did!"

I don't leave my Bean Bag mount on the dash to deter thieves as well as no sticky residue. It's in as good condition as when I bought it.

My issue...

Isn't with the Garmin friction mount leaving residue on the dash its with dirt and particles getting on the pad itself and making it less sticky and prone to sliding around on the dash. Once the pad gets dirty its not easy (that I've found) to clean it. I've resorted to using the plastic protector film that came with the mount to cover the pad when not in use to keep crud from gumming it up.

There is a slight mark on my dash where the pad sits (not dark) but I could probably fix that with some dash cleaner. I don't usually leave my GPS and friction mount in the car or even on the dash for long periods of time. Instead I usually take it down when not in use.

I bought this mount for my wife, she absolutely loves it over the window auction cup mount.

Good Thread

Good thread as I will be on the lookout for new mount here real soon. My custom mount for my Ford Escape may not work in a newer model SUV and unfortunately Progressive declared my SUV a total a few days ago. Thankfully, I was not injured.

I have both

Bean bag is pretty large and slides around on sharp turns. Friction mount works well.

Friction Mount

The only thing I don't like about the wife's friction mount is that it leaves what looks like a greasy spot on the black dash when removed. But, she just keeps a microfibre cloth sprayed with a bit of Meguires 40 Vinyl and Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner in the car and gives it a wipe and it comes off easily. But, I still like my window mount for this reason.
