Mass Turnpike Goes Ezpass Only as of 10/28

Travelers of the Massachusetts Turnpike should be aware the toll road has gone Ezpass only as of 10/28/16

http://www.wcvb.com/news/state-to-offer-details-on-new-elect...

Cameras will take photos of the license plates of non Ezpass vehicles and toll bills will be mailed to registered owners. No fines will be assessed but there is a hefty rate increase for non Ezpass vehicles.

Here in PA, we already have Ezpass only exits which have created much controversy. I'm afraid it won't be long before all toll roads go this route.

A POI file listing electronic toll collection (Ezpass, etc) highways, ETC, cash or both, would be quite useful IMO. I know most newer GPSr's have toll road avoidance features but it would still be good to know how the toll collection process works on these roads when planning a route.

NY EZ Pass

They will also charge out of staters higher tolls than those from Mass. That seems unfair.

Eastern Tolls USA

ajasaro is maintaining an "Eastern Tolls USA" file at this page:

He has a lot of really good files, well worth checking out.

thanks

I just downloaded the POI

Watching for this.... Charging extra for out of state folks

It will be interesting to see how this pans out. I live in MA with a NY EZpass that I have had before MA had anything. I'm waiting to see if I get charged extra. If I do, I'll probably reluctantly change to a MA one. I have been very happy with the NY one: excellent customer service. MA has said they didn't plan on charging out of staters extra. We shall see. BUT, they DID mention charging charging extra for MA residents using an out of state issued pass. If that happens there will be a lot of angry people here. Especially people like me who had an EZPass before MA had anything. (I originally obtained one so I could travel to/through ME, NH and NY without stopping to pay tolls.) They shouldn't be charging extra for anyone out of state. I read that for NY at least, they transfer the funds to MA with no extra charges. MA will open up a real can of "retaliation worms" if they do this....

where I think this creates a problem

is with respect to rental cars, loaner cars, and misreads of tags where someone has installed a legit EZPass in a rental or loaner.

The reason is the rightful owner tacks on a hefty "administration fee" when they get the toll from a pic of the plate.

This is where it's simply not thought out, and someone other than the driver takes advantage.

How many tourists would one imagine drives over the Golden Gate Bridge unsuspectingly in a rental car? Didn't take the overpriced toll option for the duration of the rental that they offer? How disappointing to see what is charged to your credit card.

again this is one of those

"everybody's doing it" justifications.....I never chose NJ EZPass nor do I live in NJ. My EZPass was converted to NJ, I used to have DRPA EZPass. So I'm penalized by the NY MTA everytime I use one of their facilities, charged a cash, not EZPass rate.

I must have a NJ EZPass if I want the commuter discount.

We have discussed this get a rightful EZPass where you live deal, but EZPass is in fact loosey goosey.

Surprisingly, do you know who is very strict about issuing memberships based on where you live? AAA. They will not take your money for a membership, if your address does not fall into their area, and are very strict about it.

Really?

Can you please cite your source?

When you are dead, you don’t know that you are dead. It is only difficult for the others. It is the same when you are stupid.

Very unfair (if it happens)...

....when you consider that hardly a week ago, an out-of-state driver with NO EXPass --from anywhere-- was charged the SAME amount when they pulled into a CASH ONLY lane as the EZPass holder who just drove through the automated lane next to them. But then again, this is MA, where there is always an angle to everything and the "gotcha!" fine print is always exhaustive.

Rhode Island Too

To travel over the Claiborne Pell Bridge (a.k.a. the Newport Bridge) in Rhode Island you get charged full price if you are an out-of-state resident, regardless of whether or not you have an EZPass from Rhode Island or any other state. Only if you live in Rhode Island do you get to pay $0.83 instead of $4.00 for a two-axle vehicle.

So it's not just Massachusetts. It's everywhere, which is why I avoid toll roads as much as possible. They are just about as bad as ads on the Internet.

Yikes!

That's quite a markup for non-residents!

Well...

Rhode Island has a reputation to maintain, so this is expected.

Great News

I'm taking a trip to Mass soon. Too bad EZ Pass is not valid across the whole continent.

Even so, it's not nearly as bad as the Confederation Bridge between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. While you only pay the 43.50CAN upon leaving the island, nobody gets a discount.

well..

After all gov needs money to spend. Why complain about it? Just read about ideas for extra $0.23 per gallon of gas in NJ.

And just read how everybody (but those pesky car owners) will be a winner with it.

what's interesting

that super unleaded is price inelastic today. I remember when I was young (like 1990-1999), premium was always 20 cents more than regular. Whether regular was 99 cents, or $3.299. 20 cents.

When a Federal gas tax increase went into effect, this was like 1993, the price of regular went up exactly the amount of the tax, like 4 cents. Super unleaded, to my surprise, was unchanged.

When this tax went up 23 cents 11/1/16, the price of regular went up 23 cents. The price of super went up 29 cents. Go figure. We need more n/a 8 cyl. cars, and less 4 cyl. turbos.
