Garmin Monterra Discontinued?

Somewhere this afternoon I read something that mentioned that the Garmin Monterra has been cancelled. I checked the Garmin US website and I do see it listed as a previous model? Is that a recent change? Does anybody happen to know if that is the end of the line for Android based Garmin handheld GPS devices? I always thought the Garmin Monterra was overpriced, but I sort of liked the features that it has. It a more reasonable price, I might be inclined to pick one up.

Amazon has them for $520 or

Amazon has them for $520 or more, sold through a 3rd party. From Amazon, it's $650.

Not Surprised

GPS Central in Canada has the Monterra listed on their discontinued products page:

I owned one briefly a couple of years ago and returned it using the GPS City 30 day return policy. The rep I spoke to said they weren't selling well and quite a few they did sell were being returned.

I agree with your assessment of the unit being overpriced. Without cellular connectivity, the android app feature on the Monterra is somewhat crippled since it relies entirely on wifi.

The unit is designed as a handheld and I found it lacking on the trail. The readouts are in tenths rather than hundredths which further limits it's off road usefulness.

The unit is basically a bulky cross between a smartphone and a handheld GPS but functions poorly on both counts. I prefer using my Montana handheld and smartphone.

It was an interesting concept and it does function well for certain purposes. it remains to be seen if Garmin will market another android based device.

Garmin Monterra

Strangely enough, if the price were right, I might be tempted to get one.

This is where I saw it.
