Memory Space Question

I have a question regarding my nuvi 3597 and memory space!

I tried to do an update of some (not the maps) which don't complete! I get a message stating that "INTERNAL STORAGE IS ALMOST FULL. YOU MAY WANT TO PURCHASE A MEMORY CARD FOR THIS DEVICE TO ENSURE SUFFICIENT SPACE FOR FUTURE UPDATES"!

I DO have a memory card installed in the 3597! My stats are as follows.......

INTERNAL MEMORY= 7.02 G TOTAL
FREE SPACE= 1.91G

MEMORY CARD= 7.69G TOTAL
FREE SPACE= 4.63 G

Why am I getting the message about "low on space"?

Thanks!

Mike

Some guesses

A few of us 3597 owners also have found that we're getting low on storage and that one of the next 1-3 map updates will require installing the map to a SD card to obtain all of North America. So your space issues now are not a surprise.

I think it likely that updates which are not map updates will install to the nuvi itself and not offer the SD card option. If you do get a memory low message during a map update, I expect you will be offered (and should accept) the map update to SD rather than a partial map update to the nuvi.

SD card storage: what's on the SD card now? If stuff you've added that are non-Garmin-ish, they won't be deleted. If the stuff is Garmin-related like a previous map update installed by Garmin Express or GarminMapUpdater, some of us are finding that a map update will not delete the older files and eventually, the SD card will report insufficient space to do a map update. If Garmin files were added to the SD card via Garmin's MapInstall or by using the clone technique, the files will almost certainly not be deleted. The solution then is to, after making a backup of the SD files for safety, then deleted the files on the SD card. With over 4.5GB free on the SD card now, I expect the next map update, if it doesn't fit in the nuvi, will fully install to the SD card if it needs to.

With almost 2GB of free space in the nuvi now, it's certainly possible that the next 1-2 map updates will fully install to the nuvi without the need for a SD card. Note that the install to SD card map update offer is only made when the nuvi has too little space. You won't have the option to install a map update to the SD card in advance.

Note

You'll be warned of needing to install a card even if you have a memory card installed if Express hasn't previously installed a map to a card. Since you have 1.9Gb free I should think you'll manage a few more updates without the need for a card.

What?

The question that has not been asked is:

What is "Some" to update? SOME ?????

Is it European maps?

Orphaned files?

It is quite possible that you have some "orphaned" files from old map updates that will not automatically delete when applying new updates. If you have orphaned files in internal storage that Garmin Express doesn't know how to delete, 1.9 GB is not enough space to install the full NA map and associated files, which now add up to over 6 GB on a 3597. In this case Express will put some of the map files on SD card. That situation may already have happened on your last map update.

For us to help you figure out what is going on, you will need to tell us what files you have in the .\system folder in internal storage and on your SD card in the \Garmin and \Map folders.

Also, what shows for installed maps on your 3597?

Hmmm

While I understand where you're coming from heymoe1 is getting the message about future updates, which suggests Express is perfectly happy at the moment. But maybe I'm misunderstanding what he's saying.

Understood ...

but something has put files on the SD card ... speculating it could have been a previous map update caused by orphaned files from old updates. No way to know unless we can get an explanation or a listing of what's there.

Yep

Certainly could be.

If you have more questions just fire away. That is what this forum is all about. More then a few here that will be glad to answer and question you may have.

This site is full of "A" type personalities, and are not afraid to express their comments or ideas, but nobody is getting "ticked off" so please ask away. That is what this site is for and we all look forward to some of the banter that goes on. Just like anything else, you will get several things to look and try and you have to use your best judgment on what will work for you. We are all different and what works for one, will not work for someone else, so the idea is to get everyone's opinions (yes, there are a lot of those too...smile ) and then hopefully the different pieces will get you to the outcome you are looking for.

Happy travels and hopefully the ideas or suggestions help, and if not, don't be afraid to add more details and keep asking questions until you get an answer that works.

Also, please post what you did to fix something so that we can all learn as well.

Thanks

Alan

Ask away on your questions. We all learn that way.

Memory/Storage Space

I have, on occasion, had to delete my old maps before the unit would let me update to the newer version. Kept telling me "Not enough space".

After deleting the old maps, I was able to install the new maps.
