Wil Try Today

I am going try updating my 765T today. I have never had a problem getting the full Junction View to install automatically so hopefully this will be no different.

You should have no problem

Aardvark wrote:

Your 765 should get the large JCV by default. In fact, I expect the recent availability of the large JCV file (thanks, Strephon) to the public comes from getting the file from an updated nuvi 7x5 device.

Is MEGAsyncSetup safe?

Strephon_Alkhalikoi wrote:

Just to be safe: The first thing MEGA wanted to do was download a program called MEGAsyncSetup, which I did; but I don't want to run it until I'm sure it's legit. Is it?

MEGASync

It's not necessary, but it is legit. You should be able to download the files provided using your browser, assuming of course you've bit the bullet and actually upgraded from the dinosaur that is IE11.

Thanks for posting. It will be installed in my 855 and 3790 since the 855 got the puny 25kb and the 3790 the half size JCV. NO MORE trying on the 2797.

Since the download website requires a membership, chose download with your browser !!!

Will need SD card for full NA map.

If you intend to install the full CN NA map, I think you will need a SD card for your 765T. You may have already faced this with a prior map update, but on my 755T, the 2017.20 map update was the first time I couldn't fit everything in internal storage.

Actually I do have IE11, and because of that I can't use it to download the large JCV file (and believe me, I've tried). So... if I run the setup program from MEGA first, I should then be able to do the download? Please say yes. And if I use MEGA's program, do I have to pay for it?

Large JCV

You will download the large JCV from Mega in two parts. First one of about 500kb and the second about 125kb.

In my case it saved it in my "Download" folder.

When you find the file if you use "Windows" all you need to do is to double click the first part. Windows will automatically extract both files into one as D3060210A.jcv

nuvi 7x5 or zumo 6xx

CraigW wrote:

I think the zumo 6xx devices also get the large full screen JCV file. AFAIK the zumo 6xx and the nuvi 7x5 are the only remaining Garmin devices that get the large file. So I agree the file that Strephon publishes probably came from one of these devices ... maybe he has one himself or knows someone who does.

It is kind of interesting that none of the 7x5 nuvis came with lifetime map subscriptions. There was no LMT version, only a T version. I am not sure about the zumo 6xx, but I don't think they came with lifetime map subscriptions either. On the other hand, there were LM and LMT versions in the 14xx series, and yet Garmin no longer gives these folks the large JCV. Go figure.

It's Time To Upgrade

plunder wrote:

You'll have to try it and see for yourself if it works or not. I don't use it, and have no need to, so I don't know what it does. I switched to Vivaldi recently after using "Nu-Opera" for a year or so once Chrome started complaining about some of my extensions being from outside the Chrome web store. I haven't touched Internet Explorer since 2002, outside of using it on XP for system updates.

I'll say this again, since it bears repeating from the 2017.10 JCV thread. Do not use Internet Explorer to try and download this! The problem is that Internet Explorer has a memory leak which requires shutting down the MEGA tab every so often on inbound transfers. The most expedient solution is to use another browser.

Plunder, it's time to change to a more modern browser, whether you like it or not. Internet Explorer's day is over, especially as HTML5 is the standard on the Internet now, and Internet Explorer doesn't really support it.

So...

Can some kind soul explain,

1) What the difference is between the CNNANT 2017.20 Full-Screen Junction View and what is downloaded with the 2017.20 map update?

2) what the real benefit is of using these files?

3) After downloading these files what one does with them and if after putting them into your GPS you don't like the change, how to revert to the previous?

TIA

@Barney

1) It depends on your device model. For the vast majority of Garmin devices, you get the correct (and best IMO) junction view file with the map download. The full screen file covers up the entire map when it is displayed. Some older models require this, but most newer models have split screen capability for junction views.
2) None IMO, unless you have a nuvi 7x5, 8x5, 1390, 14x0 or zumo 6xx. (Note: with the nuvi 7x5 and zumo 6xx, you automatically get the large file with the map download ... so the separate download is only necessary on the 8x5, 1390 and 14xx)
3) You revert by making sure you have backed up the JCV file that you got with the map download, then remove the large full screen JCV file and restore the original. If you forgot to make a backup, you could always reinstall the map with Garmin Express and that would get the original JCV file back.

My way

I did it my way.
After downloading the new map I found the small JVC file on my Garmin. I then took the file and renamed it by adding .old at the end after .jvc. This would make it easier to bring back if there was an error in the bigger file. I then downloaded the big JVC and expanded it to my 16 gig sd card in the JVC file. I then tried it by simulating going to Trader Joe's which took two interstate exits and it gave me full screen exits both times. I then moved the small JVC file to my Garmin old programs file on one of my terebyte drives for future thought if there came a problem.
I have many GPX files on my SD card with .old placed on the end so they are not read until I change it when I travel through that region and I add .old for areas I will not see.

Thank you Strephon!

Strephon, thank you so very much for posting the links!
Was it you who also uploaded it to the MEGA site?

Not that it matters much,

Not that it matters much, but it's my MEGA account. So yes, I'm the uploader.

I have been using a 4GB SD card for several years now. The maps easily blew out the 765T's memory a long time ago. I used to use the SD card for Open Street Maps but needed to abandon that when the Garmin maps needed the space.

Had only one issue with the update. My 3D file failed to rename from a TMP file to the correct name. I had to go in and manually change the name. Until I did that, it did not show up on the list of installed maps. First time I have had an issue with map updates.

Otherwise, the 765T continues to work. I still get the occasional software crashes that Garmin never deigned to fix. Had similar issues with other models too and it seems that particular crashes are only fixed in newer models, who in turn have their own new bugs to deal with. Malloc() errors being the most common I see on the 765T. I will continue to use it until Garmin no longer updates my maps and/or it dies. I have replaced the battery twice (first replacement battery turned out to be garbage and I replaced it again). RDS traffic works well too.

Longer View

As we discuss the full Junction View I found something that has changed. I am on a long trip to San Tan Valley and found that the full JCV picture now stays on longer as you exit the interstate. I do not know if the half screen does the same but this gives one more time to view the exit.

Thanks

Thanks Strephon for posting the large JCV file. smile

Thank you so much

Strephon, thank you for the awesome upload. Do you or anyone else know where I can d/l the CNNANT 2017 3D IMG? Advance thank you.

gmap3d.img

If you are asking about file gmap3d.img for your nuvi 765T, it comes with the map update, so you can download it just by reinstalling the latest map update with Garmin Express. And actually the large JCV file also comes with the map update for the 7x5 series, so you shouldn't need to separately download the one that Strephon posted.

gmap3d.img is one of those map files that comes with the .unl and .gma files, so it is locked to your specific device.

Thank you alandb. Will try the update.

@Fa ... please note ...

Please note that the full City Navigator North America map and associated files will no longer fit in the internal memory of the nuvi 7x5 series. You will need a SD card to succesfully install the full map update for North America. A 4GB card will work, but I would suggest a 8GB card or larger (but no larger than 32GB). Garmin Express should give you the option to insert a SD card when you try to install the map.

With all the newer devices coming as a LM or LMT model, I often forget to ask and assume a new member here at the POI Factory with an older non LM unit has purchased the numaps Lifetime (or at least a OneTime update that's not yet been used) for the unit.

Fa, can you confirm your 765T has an added lifetime map updates subscription from Garmin? If not, how did you update your map to 2017.20 and why was the large JCV file and gmap3d file that are already part of a Garmin map update needed after the update?

3D and DEM

A little of topic, but. I purchased a 3597 off eBay as a backup for my "everyday" unit. Poor description, no mount etc. but I got it cheap and I got lucky, even had a case and was in good condition. However the maps were at 2013! Only the basic CN so I plugged it into GE and it offered to update the maps. I ended up with 2017.20 and both the 3D and DEM files.

1. The bandwidth concerns are warranted, given the size of the file and the number of people who download it. 100 people downloading the file would cost the site 80GB in bandwidth. It doesn't sound like much, but when you have only a terabyte of bandwidth it's a big deal.

2. Internet Explorer is only in Windows 10 for legacy sites that don't work in a modern browser. Otherwise, a modern browser with HTML5 support should be used. I fully expect that at some point in the future Internet Explorer will be removed from Windows.

Switch browsers.

3. Clicking on a wrong link anywhere could net you a virus. Especially if not using ad blocking extensions. However, the chances increase when using an out of date browser like Internet Explorer.

Switch browsers.

765T 2017.20 Update, Can't Find GMAP3D File

Successfully downloaded 2017.20 update to my 765T. Do not see any GMAP3D files on the 765T or on the list of installed maps. I had 3D maps previously. Perhaps I had your same issue with TMP file. Not enough details in your associated comment to help me resolve. Could you provide some more specific details to reinstate GMAP3D ? I used MapUpdater 3.3.4. I have full North America update on 8GB SD card, large JCV file on 765T internal memory. I have a Windows 10 laptop. Thank you.

Try Garmin Express.

I would try to reinstall the map with Garmin Express. I know that MapUpdater has an issue with the gmapdem.img file (on some higher end 3xxx devices), but I have not heard of an issue with the gmap3d.img file. But as we know, Garmin has not supported or updated MapUpdater for quite some time, so my advice is to try Garmin Express (I got the 2017.20 gmap3d.img file using Express on my 755T).
