GARMIN POI USAGE

Hello! I am a bit confused. I have downloaded POIs to my PC, and loaded them to my Garmin with POI Loader! My question is this.....is it possible to have POI files run continuously in the background, so that they appear on my GPS as I am traveling, or are the POI files only usable in a static-type mode! I see them in the Garmin, and I can open them to look for the POI close by when stopped...but I would like them to pop-up/appear on the GPS dynamically as I am driving. Is that a possibility?

Thank you in advance!

On your 3597

The Custom POI you have installed through POI Loader will appear on the map as a small dots. However if you download or create a .bmp file for each of the POI files you wish to see, they will appear on the map as you drive. There are detailed instructions on this site for how to create one, but if you look at the top of this page you will see a button for Icons which will take you to a library full of them, or if you downloaded the POI file from here, there is often 1 or more icons to choose from. The 48x48 size display nicely on the 3597. The key is that the name of the icon must be exactly as the name of the file. For example.

My_POI.csv
My_POI.bmp

You may have to rename the icon file name to match the POI file name. Copy these .bmp files into the folder on your PC where you put the POI files, then rerun POI Loader. The Icons may not show up at certain zoom levels, but will for the normal levels displayed when driving.

I was thinking there was a setting on the 3597 (and some others) that needs to be checked in order for the icons to display but I can't spot where it is at the moment.

Edit: Go to Settings > Map & Vehicle > Map Layers: Place a check in Places along the road.

You do not need to set proximity alerts, etc. to make this work, only that the icon file coexists with the data file and have identical names.

You do know eventually that it will drive him nuts. The small screen and all those icons. Heaven forbid some might have alerts too. mrgreen
