Nuvi 2689LMT - No "Safely Disconnect" icon in system tray

Hi, all,

When I have my new Garmin nuvi 2689LMT connected to my PC (Windows 7), there is no "Safely Disconnect" icon in the system tray, and no "eject" option in "my computer". Each time, I have had to just unplug the USB. This makes me quite concerned that data from the nuvi might be lost or corrupted, but I have no idea how to resolve the issue.

Any thoughts, help, or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

MTP mode

Newer Garmin models use MTP mode by default, theoretically there is no need to 'safe eject' MTP devices.

To resolve it do what I do, set your nuvi to mass storage mode:

1. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
2. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
3. The Developers Screen will pop up
(may see Configuration and Settings, if so select it)
4. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
5. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
6. Shut down NUVI and connect to PC
7. It should now connect in mass storage mode.

As an alternative to step 1 and 2 above, you can bring up the Nuvi's "trip information" screen by tapping the speed icon, then press and hold the speedometer for about 10 seconds to access the developer screen. Now go from step 3.

Although

Although you can follow the procedures sussamb details above there are a few things/cautions you should be aware of when switching from MTP to Mass Storage mode.

- Making this change will expose the hidden .system folder on your Nuvi(if you've also made changes to the Windows Folder View Options). With the .system folder exposed you are exposing all of the important files on your GPS, like the map files for example. Making the detailed chance and exposing these files makes it that much easier to delete them by mistake.

- there is a third options MTP Settings screen, detailed above, and that is Mass Storage this session only. Picking this option will change the Nuvi's settings from MTP to Mass Storage but once you turn the unit off it will revert back to MTP mode. This is somewhat of a safety feature for protecting your .system folder files by not leaving them exposed.

- as mentioned leaving the GPS in MTP mode means you no longer have to "safely remove" the device from your computer.

Would Mass Storage Mode be a safer way to connect?

One thing I forgot to mention in my post was that when I took the nuvi to my car and plugged it in afterward, the computer mode icon showed on the Garmin. I just unplugged it and turned it off. An hour later I plugged it in again and it was fine, except that ny "wake up" phrase for Voice Command had been lost and needed to be reset.

So if Mass Storage Mode is safer, I will definitely do that. Will I then see the "Safely eject" icon in the system tray?

Thank you.

Sorry...

...wrote my last post before seeing your reply.

MTP is probably easier, but I don't know what caused the other issues.

@CarolR

If you make backups of your nuvi (once it is in MS mode), any risk of accidentally harming any file will be minimized by leaving the device in MS mode.

I leave all of our families nuvis in MS mode.

mass storage mode

I leave my 3597 in Mass Storage mode. Just for good practice I have a full backup of all the files and folders on the nuvi.

reboot the nuvi

After having the nuvi plugged in to the PC, I always reboot the nuvi before putting it in the car. (not just sleep) There is no need to wait an hour.

good practice

Whenever connecting the nuvi to the PC, it is safe to use Garmin Express, BaseCamp, or POI Loader. There is a risk of making a mistake whenever going into the folders and files inside the nuvi and using "cut," "paste," "delete," or "format." This is for experienced users only, and they should have a plan to recover after making a mistake.

If there is an SD card installed, that will be displayed on the PC as a separate drive. It is not always obvious which drive is the nuvi and which is the SD card.

Well, I did backup the nuvi

before deleting all languages other than English, French, Italian and Spanish from voice, text, keyboard, and then backed up again afterward.

The computer did indicate which was the nuvi and which was the card.

Haven't used POI Loader in a few years, and with Foursquare I'm not sure how useful POIs are anymore, other than red light and safety cameras, especially considering how long it's been since many POIs were updated.

I have never used Basecamp and am not at all familiar with it.

Lots new to learn, I guess.

If interested in learning about Basecamp. I would start here http://www.poi-factory.com/node/41134

Which POI's are you looking at that aren't updated?

Most of the common ones are updated on a regular basis.

Nuvi 2460LMT.

One year later

So now here I am almost exactly one year later. When I plug my 2689 into the computer it is not recognized by the PC or by Garmin Express. It makes the 'wrong' sound when I connect it, and the 'right' sound when I disconnect it. Tried changing to "mass storage mode one session" which didn't help. Screen freezes with faded computer mode icon, can't be turned off, and remains that way until I take it out and connect it in my vehicle again.

Works just fine in the vehicle.

Once again, asking for help please?

Thanks.

Your PC isn't seeing it then maybe try a different cable or another usb port?
