Can you hide Garmin favorites on map?

Just bought a Garmin 2597. I copied my favorites over from old 205w. The problem is I have so many favorites you can't see the map sometimes when navigating or read street signs when driving or zooming out. Tried to turn off whats up ahead through map tools and map layers. When you are in the map layer setting, the favorites disappear from the little map, but they still show up on the big map. Anyway to hide?

Favourites or POIs?
Are you sure they're favourites? Often folks complain that the newer models don't show favourites! Or are these POIs you've transferred across?
If POIs I know of no way to turn them off although POIs on my 2508 only show when you're zoomed in. You could try adjusting the map detail in Settings, Map & Vehicles, Map Detail

Icons
Are the icons showing up, blocking your display? IF they are then I believe sussmanb is correct and it is actually your POI files. If you have that many, I would delete all or most of the icons altogether then reload the POIs.

Will my automotive device display POI icons on the map?
Most automotive devices will only display icons on the map for your saved Favorites or custom Points of Interest (POI) files that you may have installed. To view the custom POI icons, you will need to zoom in the map to 200 feet or closer. The preloaded points of interest (restaurants, hotels, attractions, etc.) will not display icons on the map if they are not also saved favorites.
The device will show the POI icons on the map when it has started moving or is in an active route.
POI icons will NOT display on the map if your map view is set to either North Up or Track Up.

Favorites display
I believe it is model dependent. Garmin removes features on some units and then adds them back to other models claiming they are "new" features.
I don't have any of my GPS units in front of me, but I think that with most of the units I have, the "Favorites" show up as POI's.
I can either turn them all off, or all on, but not selectively.
