I recently emailed Garmin for MapSource software DVD I got a response from them and here is what they said;
Thank you for contacting Garmin International,
I will be happy to help you with this issue. First, I will need to know if you are getting any error messages when you try to update MapSource. Also, give me a brief summary of your method of installing the software.

Call the Tech Team - Not the Sales dept.
Ask them for a DVD, and most times they will send you one free..

If at first you don't succeed

and if at first you don't succeed, call, call again.
Many times one rep won't send you the software, but the next will. Most of them have in the past, but the first one I got wouldn't.
I plan to live forever. So far, so good.
I sent them an e-mail
I sent them an e-mail explaining that I needed MapSource to manage my POIs. They sent me an e-mail back saying I will be happy to help you with this........just give us a call and we can send the DVD to you.......the cost is $15.
Fine.........no problem......so I call and explain it again and the tech tells me that MapSource is not compatible with the Nuvi 660.......blah blah and that I can't manage POIs in Mapsource and it should be done in Excel.....blah blah. So I stressed that I really would like a copy ........so he checked and ......they don't have it in stock and it won't be in stock as they are between map versions.
My GOD!!!.......it's like pulling teeth trying to get a copy of MS. If for nothing else I would just like to be able to look at the map on a large screen when planning a trip. I have an unlock code........what is the big deal?
Nuvi 660
Persistence
Keep trying.
I was initially nervous to ask for it. But after reading the comments here. Called and got lucky, the tech was more than helpful. Said they were backlogged. But would put the order in. Got it free of charge, in the mail about a week later. This was a few months ago, though.

Thanks for the reply. I filled out their contact page on their support webpage stating I wanted Mapsource to save my favorites and got an email back 3 days later with a location to download Mapsource. Is this right?
Thanks,
Roger
.
No. You can't download MapSorce. You can only download the program updated.
YOU NEED TO CALL THEM. Tell them that you want it to MANAGE YOUR FAVORITES and transfer them to and from your unit.
Mine's in the mail...
I fired off an e-mail to Garmin, and got this response within 8 hours....
"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I have ordered you a
MapSource DVD for City Navigator North America NT v8. Your order number
is 4052821.
You are not being charged for this DVD and the package is marked
appropriately. However, your country may decide to charge you duty or
customs fees.

Mapsource Subscription Service?
Wouldn't it be great if Garmin provided an annual Mapsource update subscription service? Say for the same price as the DVD, frequent mapsource updates throughout the year to your computer for sync with your gps device using the webupdater? I would buy that all day long. I for one would prefer to have instant updates throughout the year rather than hoping for a new DVD every Fall. Hopefully something like this is already in the works.
Map Source
I just called Garmin Sales and told them I wanted it. The lady asked me for my address. I asked her if she needed my serial number or anything and she said no. She just said I must have the unlock code, which I received when I registered my Nuvi 680. Even though I can't upload my waypoints on the 680, once I received the DVD for free, I loaded it up and it's really handy for creating waypoints to show which way I really want to go versus what the 680 says. I can print maps from it. It's great, just keep calling until you get someone from Garmin that will send it to you for free.
