Coordinates and Address just don't match

I know I am a newbie at this but, I just can't seem to get the two close. I had the idea to make a POI file for CNG stations (Natural Gas) throughout Cal. I was 80% done when I found one here that was complete. I loaded the file and tried it out. It took me to a dead-end about 2 miles away from the station. I tried mine made from Google Earth and I was some 20 miles away. No data is better than bad data. If I could only enter the addresses in my TT-510 and capture them as a POI, I wouldn't mind keying everything in as long as it would be accurate. I figure you guys are the pro's and I just need some advice on what to do.

Thanks,

Ralph

That's a tricky one. Here is

That's a tricky one. Here is what I have done for other things, like skateparks that don't show up on maps because they have been recently built.

I go into google earth and manually search for them (because I can see the terrain and possibley see where one was getting ready to be built, etc.). I then load the coordinates manually or with a conversion program (search for kml to csv convert).

I know this is less than adequate, because you don't probably know where they all are. However, you can start with the ones you do know and then others people may join in the search. This is a great community when it comes to determined people. And when you get to google earth you may find others have already added info points about them.

Hope that is some help.

Try this site...

http://stevemorse.org/jcal/latlon.php

Put in an address for lat/long coordinates and then check them using Google Earth as stated above.

Thanks, I will try these.

Thanks,

I will try these. Maybe the conversion program will work. I will let you know.

You can also enter addresses

You can also enter addresses directly into google earth. It will accept lat and long as well. However, if you are going to cut it from a garmin csv file you will need to reverse the coords (for some reason they are backwards in the garmin files ... and maybe other gps files too).

In the csv it looks like this:
-111.894927,33.640749

It needs to be entered into google earth like this:
33.640749,-111.894927

Or just and address:
100 Main St Scottsdale, AZ

510's and POI's

You can use your 510 to give you the coordinates of an entered address then use that info to create your own POI using POIEdit 2007.

To use the POI's listed here in your 510 you have to convert them from .csv format to .ov2 format. It's simple to do using the BATCH CONVERT feature in POIEdit 2007 - you'll find it under the TOOLS menu in the program. Simply stated, the program will automatically convert (reverse) the lat/long positions for you.

TomTom's use .ov2 files and Garmin's use .csv files.

Hope this helps.
