Evidence of a "Trained Garmin"

I'm posting this under a separate thread.

I read the thread about 'Trained Garmin' and at that time never heard or saw anything about that.....

Yesterday, we got in car and plugged in 2689. Hit Accept, then View Map...... THAT IS ALL... We did NOT select any router or hit any other keys....
We were headed to the Rec Center, as we do quite often....

As we started down the mountain, Across the top was displayed:

"Waynesville Recreation..... 24 miles No Traffic"

There was no purple route line.....

As we progressed the mileage decreased....

To my knowledge, there is no Traffic stations within reception range of our location... We're surrounded by mountains...

We DO have "Waynesville Recreation" entered as a saved destination, but after plugging power in, all we hit was 'accept' and 'view map'...

OK... That is what happened. We've NEVER SEEN anything like this before.... Nor Since (On the way home it acted 'normally')

Can anyone give any suggestions of what we saw yesterday?

Very curious

Can't wait for someone to answer your post.

Traffic Trends

What you are seeing is from the traffic trends history. It has "learned" that one of your more popular destinations is the Rec Center so the unit "assumes" that is where you want to go. Mine is similar but a bit more refined in that it appears to take the time of day into account. If I leave early in the morning, it assumes I'm joining friends for breakfast and lets me know the time and traffic toward that destination. Later in the day it assumes I'm headed to another place I frequent.

The traffic report is coming through the SmartLink connection as there are no HD traffic stations in the Asheville/Waynesville area to my knowledge.

Trends

I thought that this feature was "MyTrends" and not the Traffic Trends. Either way, if you have destinations set either by navigating to them through "Where To", or saved in favorites, the Garmin assumes you may be going there and gives you the ETA and any traffic even if you do not set it as a destination. I've even seen this feature change which destination it think you are going to based on time of day!

As a side note, I was in Waynesville the other week. Greetings from Asheville!
I can also confirm there are no HD traffic areas in the area. (Closest one I've seen is Greenville, SC)

This sounds like your device's myTrends is enabled and with the rec center saved as a Favorite and you've gone there several times in the past from home. As a result, the nuvi 'suggests' that maybe you want to go to the rec center. If you tapped the top rec center banner, a route would have been created. If you don't want suggestions, disable myTrends.

Thanks for this info!! It's amazing what this does compared to the 660!

We just moved to Waynesville last July... If your eastbound on I40, we're partway up the mountain on your right, about 5 mile south of Exit 20. Used to driving in deep snow & cold in Illinois, but here it's like learning how to drive all over again!
Come on, Spring!

myTrends

Here is the info from Garmin

The myTrends feature is available on select Garmin products. When you travel regularly to saved destinations, your device will, over time, begin to figure out where you’re going even without your telling it. Your device will provide a predicted route which will display in the information bar at the top of the map screen. myTrends provides time of arrival and relevant traffic information in the information bar.

Note: myTrends is a feature that does not work out of the box when you first begin using your device.

In order to effectively use the myTrends feature you must meet the following requirements before myTrends will display time of arrival and relevant traffic information:

Your frequent destinations must be saved in Favorites or Saved on your device, i.e. Home, Work, etc.
A regular pattern of driving habits must be established before myTrends will display on your device:
Daily regular pattern of driving takes at least 3 days of usage
Weekly regular pattern of driving such as a different destination on different days would take 2-3 weeks of regular usage

Thanks All...

If you like the suggestions, know that the training will be lost upon a hard reset of the device.

Travel History

Looking in my manual. It also says having check mark in Travel History allows device to collect information for myTrends, Where I've Been and Trip Log Features. So if you plan to use that feature make sure that check mark is in Travel History.

Trained Garmin

When I got my new Garmin, I tried it out by setting my home. The GPS told me the route it wanted me to go. I know a shorter way, and went that way. The next time I set the same destination it sent me the way I used the first time.
I guess it remembered the new way.

Where is???

charlesd45, I finally got around to checking to see if travel history is checked or not....

I'm not finding a Travel History in 2689 settings....
In Traffic, I see 'Optimize Route', and that is set 'On Request' Other option is 'Automatic' Should I set Automatic?

Next, in 'Traffic' I see 'trafficTrends', and that is un-checked.... ?????

And where is Travel History?

--

After looking at manual..... More confused...

I found 'Travel History' in Device Settings... It is Checked...

But I cannot find 'Optimize Route' in the manual... though it is in traffic-Optimize Route... Is this something new, that didn't make it to manual?

I have also found an explanation of 'trafficTrends' and I have checked that box...

Travel History was found and

Travel History was found and it is checked.... It was where you said.

I'm still looking for the explanation of: 'Optimize Route'

Thanks for your help! smile!

Checking Traffic Trends uses historic data to calculate the most efficient route.Note Different routes may be calculate based on traffic trends for the day of the week or time of the day.

Same as When Heading Home

My Nuvi LMT2460 does the same when heading home without adding a destination. It just assumes I am headed home but shows no indicated route. It gives time to home and traffic indication. Hmmmmmmmmmmm!

Is your unit a 2689? I just bought one (2689) for work at the end of last season so I haven't used it much yet, currently on winter lay-off and my Jeep has navigation built in (Garmin based 430N).

There's a route I like to take to the mountains that is a combo of a "fastest" route and a "shortest distance" route, it took me a while to remember the route on my own, would the 2689 be able to remember the route I like without actually creating and saving a route?

Optimize Route. Setting I use Automatic

The Optimize Route settings allow a choice for how a device will respond when encountering a traffic incident. Devices1 with this option can choose between:

On Request - In the event of a traffic incident an on-screen prompt will appear offering the ability to route around the delay.

Automatic - The device will automatically calculate an alternative route if it will save sufficient time. The device will only automatically change the route if the traffic delay is greater than 15 minutes, and if the alternate route will save more than 15 minutes.

To change the Optimize Route settings:

Touch Settings
Touch Traffic
Touch Optimize Route
Select On Request or Automatic
Touch Save

Once the preferred option is saved the device will respond accordingly when encountering a traffic incident. It is only possible to change this setting while connected to a vehicle with the included traffic receiver/vehicle power cable.

With either setting the device will automatically locate a new route if a road closure is detected.

TrafficTrends and myTrends

I can see where folks may desire or dislike myTrends and the dislikers would disable the feature.

I don't see why anyone would want to disable TrafficTrends. Knowing that certain streets have Rush Hour issues in the AM and PM and including the congestion into finding the Fastest Route seems very desirable to me.

...End of my 2 cents.

Interesting, yet strange.

I have the following in my

I have the following in my NuviCam and I think same settings in 3597..

Under device:

Position reporting -> share position to improve content
Travel history - My trends, where I've been and trip log

Under traffic:

Traffic trends - enhance navigation with predicted traffic flow.

Position reporting is interesting one. This setting probably helps them with traffic update while I am driving.

Your Nuvi starts learning your daily routes if you have "Travel history" enabled. When you get the pop up about your favorite destination with travel time info and you select the destination. It will pick your proffered route you use all the time. It will not make its own route at that point. But if you deviate once from that route then it will recalculate the route with its own calculation. So i like this feature.

Interesting, I usually just click on recent for destinations, it may be why I never see the auto selection. I'll have to check and input into the saved/favorite setting. Also will have to check out the other settings to enable the predictive feature.

So is it only saving destinations to favorite and setting Mytrends on and Travel history on for this to work?

Feedback if possible

If you get the opportunity to post back on your results it could benefit other members. Even better if we could get lots of feedback from all that are using these features.
