3490 No Longer Supported?

So it's been awhile since I did a firmware update and it appears the last update was March '14 (v.8.20). I'm assuming they no longer support this model? Seems like it had a two to three year run of updates. Is this about the normal time frame for updates?

8.20

Yes, the last update was 8.20

But that doesn't mean the model is no longer supported or that no more updates will be offered. Looking at the bright side, it could mean that it's now nearly bug-free.

Good point

To check if your Garmin is still supported

At the top of our
INDEX to FAQs and Other Pages

is a link to the
A Glossary of Terms and Links

and in the Glossary (near the bottom) is a link to "Discontinued" Garmin models

If anyone is wondering is their model is still supported, then see if it is in the Garmin Discontinued Models

If you click on the "View All" link near the top of the page on the right hand side and then start scrolling down (note the devices are arranged in numerical order with model type) and find your device, then "Yes" your model has been discontinued.

For instance, my 765T is discontinued.
My 2595LMT is not found so it is still active.
My 2597LMT is not found so it is still active.
I found the 3490LMT, so your's looks like it is discontinued.

HOWEVER - having a device be discontinued does not mean you ought to be getting a new unit. I have been very happy with my 765T and have replaced its battery. It still works fine and I like the fact that it has a MP3 player. I bought the other models for a daughter and a grandson.

support.

I guess it depends on how you define "supported". Discontinued does not mean unsupported. In my view, as long as you can still get technical assistance from Garmin for troubleshooting, map installation, etc. the device is still supported. Garmin is still giving technical help on devices as old as the Street Pilot and nuvi 300, so I think you will be able to get that kind of support on your 3490 for years to come ... and don't be too surprised if a software update shows up sometime. Garmin firmware generally becomes very stable and trouble free after the first couple of years, so regular software updates aren't needed.

If you like frequent updates buy one of the newest models and you will get and need updates frequently. wink

The problem you have now is they have already fixed all the glitches and problems on that unit.

Not Upgrading

Yeah...I'm still happy with this unit. Almost switched to the NuviCAM but realized the resolution of the camera was not as good as my DashCam 20 and the size of that unit is way too big for traveling. I like the fact that the 3490 is still pocket sized and works well in all the rental cars. I have no trouble reading the screen.

Anyway, thanks again.

Discontinued does not mean no more updates

Even if a model is discontinued it may still receive updated firmware if Garmin determines that an update is necessary. For example, the 200 received version 5.0 of its firmware in 2008. In 2012, after the device had been discontinued for quite a while Garmin suddenly released version 5.1 of the firmware, in order to allow device owners to utilize a second map on the SD card.
