Lane Watch Side View Camera DIY "Mod" Desired on Garmin Nuvi 2798LMT

I have a Garmin 2798LMT with a wireless backup camera in my Honda. It works great but recently I've been thinking that it would be great if in addition to the backup camera, I could also have another side view camera mounted on my door mirror which would activate when the turn signal is turned on like my other car does from the factory.

Questions:

1. Does anyone know if a second wireless Garmin BC20 camera would work? I would assume so since generally speaking, only one would be on at any given time. Then again, it may only allow one to be "paired" with the device to prevent it activating from nearby cars with the same system.

2. How would I wire a camera to stay on for a period of time say 10 seconds when the turn signal is on without it shutting off i.e. blinking like the light bulb does? Do I need a relay or something?

Any thoughts anyone?

Any thoughts anyone?

Apparently

According to one product reviewer, you can pair a second BC-20 camera with an RV 760 or your 2798 as long as separate power sources are used for each camera.

They will not operate simultaneously though so you can't be in reverse with the turn signal on.

IMO, some sort of relay timeout circuit would be needed to keep the camera from "pulsing" along with the turn signal lights if you use that circuit to power the second camera.

A simpler but costly solution would be to replace your 2798 GPS and BC-20 with the 2789 GPS and BC-30 camera system which supports multiple camera inputs. Unfortunately, your 2798 isn't compatible with the BC-30.

I just got a 2689 with a BC-30, and would like to put in a front cam, and the side view would be nice also...

And I to am wondering about the blinking power supply question. On-off would not be so good, LOL!

And if I'm hearing the specs correctly, you would need to get a BC-30 to allow more than one camera... What I don't know is if the second cam has to be a BC-30, or can you add the BC-20 in as well...??? Then there is the whole other question is do you only add the BC-30 that does not have all the goodies?
(The part number that is about half the price as the full kit?)

Thx, Dan'l Garmin 2689LMT with BC-30 Backup camera system, GPS Map 62s

wow, i did not even knew

wow, i did not even knew that this was an option with any of the GPS devices. so practically one can see in all directions outside their vehicle using these cameras through the GPS?

More Information

AFAIK, the older BC-20 camera will not work with the newer BC-30 camera system. The BC-20 uses a receiver which is part of the GPS mount. The BC-30 uses a receiver which is molded into the power cord.
You must use a BC-30 add on camera such as:

The easiest way to power a front facing BC-30 camera is to wire it to a 12 volt source which is on when the ignition is on. You will need to select the camera manually from the GPS screen since the camera will be on whenever the engine is running.

Having side mount cameras on the left, right or both sides of the vehicle would definitely offer a safety advantage but will be much more difficult to power. I found a discussion on the subject in another forum where a few wiring diagrams are posted.

If you are handy with a soldering iron, you may be able to adapt one of these circuits using standard electronic components and a couple of automotive relays which will allow the camera to be wired to the turn signal without the pulsing issue.

im handy
