Garmin Gpsmap 478 obsolete?

This must be an already discussed topic but does anyone know a solution to the 478's memory or lack there of. It has the special Garmin proprietary slot but no memory to be found other than so small sticks on ebay that wouldn't help much and still would hold the latest map.

After many, many miles in boats, cars, and motorcycles, I really still prefer this map view to all the new 3D stuff. Any help appreciated.

Garmin Nuvi 1300, GPSmap 478

My guess ... obsolete.

WIth that proprietary format and form factor on the 478, it is doubtful that you will find a solution to this. Even if you could find a larger data card, would the 478's firmware be able to handle it?

Hopefully someone here will have a more authoritative answer, but most of us at POI Factory are more familiar with the Garmin automotive line, and handhelds to some degree. I have not seen very many posts regarding the marine units.

Marine charts not available

Up-to-date marine charts are not available for this unit. Modern Garmin charts for the Gulf Coast cost about $300- but they are high in resolution for more modern chartplotters and will not run on the 478. There may be low-res chart CDs or data cards (Garmin BlueChart G2) available for $100- or more on Ebay or various websites for this unit, but these charts have not been updated in at least several years.

For marine use, up-to-date charts must be used. Physical conditions can change.

From the manual:

Programmable Data Cards: Blank data cards available in 16 MB, 32 MB, 64 MB, 128 MB, 256 MB, and 512 MB sizes. Download detailed map data from MapSource CD-ROMs to a data card, either directly through your GPSMAP 378/478 using the PC USB cable, the optional PC Interface cable, or with the optional USB Data Card Programmer.

Garmin proprietary data cards are not SD cards.
