New Map file won't install properly with Garmin Express

I keep trying to install the new map file and it gets to 73% installed then it starts the reinstall again starting from 50%. It does this every time. I uninstalled and reinstalled Garmin express and it didn't help. I tried using the stand alone map installer with windows 10 and it crashes every time I run it. I unplugged my Garmin 2595 and then I plugged it back in, it showed that My GPS has the most current version map file. I tried reinstalling the current map again and it stops before 73% installed and it starts over again at 50%. I don't know what to do now. It shows the most current version map, but it never installed completely using Garmin Express.

May

May want to have another look as the update is being discussed at:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/45261

Granted the ? at the end of the thread title maybe a bit confusing.

When I got to around 65% installed all of a sudden my time remaining went from 12 minutes left and suddenly jumped to 23 hours left. The percentage installed also went backward to around 50% completed. I just waited it out for about 15 minutes and then all of a sudden GE said everything was finished installing. But just a second before that happened I was still stuck at 50% installed. Not sure what happened but it does appear the map was installed correctly to my 3590. I tested it out today on a previously scheduled 120 mile round trip and it worked perfect.

My 3590 shows the new update was indeed installed.

Garmin Map Update Problems . . .

I was attempting to update my maps and received nearly 50% and then the download stream went to 10kbps. I stopped the process and learned that Garmin had a server problem...waited until the next day and started update process again, it was slow at first and then it started to speed-up.

Finally the process completed, then I re-cehecked and learned there was another update, it went okay and after it completed yet another update was presented. After all the updates were installed everything is working as designed.

I am thinking that Garmin's Servers may be having some problems.

Download

I downloaded it last night.
No problem

My problem Windows 10

Seeing that there was a new download I fell for it. I just had my laptop upgraded to WIN 10 from WIN 8.1 and obviously not recognized the garbage that comes with it. I think there should be a law that prohibits children under 40-45 that have phones welded to their hands to upgrade systems.
My first attempt after one hour showed a red banner that there was an error in downloading. I checked the Garmin under TOOLS MAP INFO it showed that I only had Map 2015 40 on it. My other maps had disappeared.
I then disconnected it and looked again and it said the same. My question was "Why".
Checking my system told me that the display on this laptop would shut down after 30 minutes if no movement. It would shut down after 45 minutes. This led me to believe that some of the complaints were wrongly expressed but I think that people should when downloading move the mouse every so often to tell the computer that is being used.
After changing I reloaded the program in 45 minutes.

One

One other option with a laptop is to go into the Windows power options and insure that when plugged in the laptop should NEVER go to sleep/shutdown.

The Power Settings can be changed in Control Panel - Hardware and Sounds - Power Options - Edit Plan Settings.

That's what I do.
The 2016.20 update has gone through uneventfully. It took ~20 min to download for the 3597 and about <1min for the second download for 2495.

2016.20

You have to install the updates first and let them load. I then plugged in my unit. and the map updated.

I had been trying to do this all day long then I read the instructions.

One solution

Whenever I use my laptop to do anything that will require some period of time to complete, I invoke a portable, freeware package called "Don't Sleep". You can get it from
http://www.portablefreeware.com/index.php?q=don%27t+sleep&m=

Quote:

Don't Sleep helps prevent system Shutdown, Standby, Hibernate, Turn Off and Restart operations. This is useful to temporarily disable automatic power-saving tools without modifying any system settings. Works great for running a presentation, defragmenting a disk, or encoding a large file.

As the great philosopher Pogo said "We have met the enemy and he is us"

Disable

The sleep and screensaver functions go back to the days of CRT monitors where if you had a stationary picture for too long it could burn an image into the screen.

These days with LCD and LED screens that is not the case anymore. So you should be able to safely leave a screen on all day without any problems.

My laptops screens are all set to stay on when connected to AC and I have never had a problem.

I had the same problem, each

I had the same problem, each time it said 10 minutes left it would reset the time to 4 hours after so many trys I removed the new version and reinstalled the old version with complete success if you having problems, go back to the old version, it works just fine

Problems as well with update..

Started update and had to leave with 31 minutes left to finish. Came back 5 hours later and still 31 minutes left. Same thing happened with my Garmin 550 about 2 years ago and by unplugging from the computer it turned into a brick when it powered back up.
This time I clicked on Garmin express and it was obvious it was frozen so I clicked to close it even with the warnings. What else can you do? I immediately restarted express with my Nuvi still attached to computer so it didn't go through a power up cycle. Express started and finished where it left off in 10 minutes.
I think the key is do not disconnect the GPS from the computer, simply restart Express. It worked for me.

Try running rebooting GPS

Try running rebooting GPS and computer and then run Garmin Express as Administrator.

Same here

Same thing happened to me (mentioned it in the other thread). GE hung part way through the install. Leaving the GPS attached and killing the GE program waiting a few minutes then restarting the GE program and performing the update worked. The GE program then went a bit schizoid on the progress bar and time remaining for a bit (progress bar jumped all over the place, time remaining also jumped all over the place) but then finished the update in 10 or 15 minutes. I was installing the map update to both the Nuvi and to the PC.

Won't make a difference in my opinion

Problem is Garmin Server or Express itself is stopping and my guess is it is the server since Express was still responsive. This is the exact same problem I had with my 550. You unplug it so it losses power and likely you'll brick it. While I don't know for sure I believe removing cable from Nuvi to computer(removing power)and allowing it to reboot with only 50% of the download done is not a good idea. By simply closing Express and re-starting it does not remove power to the garmin and Express simply picked up where it stopped after a few hiccups. In my case it was a 5 hour stoppage.

Possibly

Except I don't believe anyone has ever reported this sort of behavior using the Garmin Map Updater therefore I tend to believe the culprit is the Express program.

GE and Map updater

Two days ago I did my 855 and 2797 simultaneously.
One using GE and the other Map updater.
Both worked like a charm and took almost the identical time.

High demand on garmin servers

In my opinion, many of the complaints about Garmin Express are due to Garmin servers being slow due to customer demand when a new map update comes out. The interest of so many posters on POI Factory is just one indication of the worldwide demand for the latest map update.

My policy is to wait weeks or months before updating, and I have never had a problem!

dobs108 smile

You may be right.

You may be right about Garmin server overload, but I always update all 3 of my nuvi's as soon as I am aware of the update ... either the day the map is released or the next day at the latest. I have applied every map update since Lifetime Maps were introduced in 2009. I have used both Garmin MapUpdater and Garmin Express (on the last 3 or 4 map updates) and have rarely had any problem with downloads or the Garmin servers.

Finally installed express and experienced the stalling problem for the first time. Never had the problem when using mapupdater. sad

New Garmin support FAQ regarding download failures.

I ran across this recently added FAQ on the Garmin support site regarding map updates failing at the 50% completed mark. I know this does not answer all of the problems addressed in this current thread, but maybe could explain a couple of them. Here is the Garmin FAQ: Why does my Downloadable Content freeze at 50%?

I was trying to think if this link should be added to an existing POI Factory FAQ ... maybe the "Common Problems and Solutions"? Or are links to the Garmin Support site discouraged or not allowed in the POI Factory FAQ's? Suggestions?

I've certainly seen Garmin links offered with POI Factory FAQs and certainly with forum discussions. There are a couple small issues related to this which the FAQ authors will do well to check occasionally. One is that a Garmin FAQ or Support link may be here today and next week, but that there's a fair chance it will be gone in 1-2 years. One solution is to offer at The Factory the text of Garmin link but I think there was some hesitation among TPTB here in using that method.

The other, related to the link you offer, is that it offers slightly outdated info since it refers to making sure you have the current Garmin Communicator Plug-In even though Garmin no longer requires computer to have Communicator installed, due in part to many browsers no longer supporting plug-ins.

Since I have experienced broken links to the Garmin site before, I thought it was better to put into "Common Problems and Solutions" as well as create a FAQ.
"Solutions" already fixed
