Venting against Mayflower

I retired and moved from Chicagoland to Mountains of NC in July.

Delivery of IL Furniture took 2 days due to mountain roads, not amount of furniture.

End of day One, we discovered that 1 of 2 1970-1980 French bicycles that I recently restored ("Don't worry, we'll take good care of them") arrived with it's front derailleur badly bent. While I awaited the 2nd day's delivery, I was very concerned that no-one would be able to repair or replace this damage as: This bike has high sentimental value, and the French (1980 Peugeot U09) bike's frame is different diameter compared to today's bikes. The model derailleur was only made for 3-4 years in 1970-1980's, and the French company, Simplex went belly up in late 80's or early 90's.

Knowing this, and fact that I had time on my hands, and that I had 6 months prior completely restored the bike with all new bearings, etc., I removed the damaged hardware, and in about 8 hours time, straightened, re-installed, and re-aligned the derailleur until it was like new....

The end of the next day's remaining furniture delivery came with the realization that a lamp is missing (put on truck in IL, Not on truck in NC), Wife's jewelry stand is destroyed, and a Tektronix shop cart wheel is missing, though the $3K Oscilloscope is OK. I went to Wall Mart and got replacement wheels for ~$9 (I you know Tektronix parts pricing, it would have been Pricey!).

I alerted Mayflower to the Missing Lamp (And provided a picture) and mentioned the damage to the Jewelry Stand, Bike, and Scope Cart. At first they only wanted to hear about missing lamp, which had a paper trail of being loaded in IL, and documented Missing in NC. But I was scolded me about the work I did on scope cart and bike...

2 months later I was contacted and informed that the lamp could not be found, and I must put a claim in on it. "What about the damaged Jewelry Stand, Bike, and Scope Cart?" "Submit a claim"

So I did.... and I waited a couple weeks, and they never replied to me. So I contacted them and asked if they had any questions.

This is when the hard nosed approach started:

They (Mayflower) already made their decision and cut a check.
There was no questions to me.
Though the bike and the Scope Cart were both repaired by me, they decided to allow $10 for the Wall Mart Parts, but NOTHING for the damage to the 1980 French Bike.
Since I had called them prior to receiving the letter about this... I of course disputed this with them, and went to Bike Shop #1, who said that the bike would have been a write off due to age and in-ability to get that part for the odd sized French Frame (New parts wouldn't fit)... Shop #1 said bike's worth on write off: $300.
I reported this to Mayflower Claims.... Fell on Deaf Ears.
I took bike to Shop #2, and 'got lucky'... This older gentleman as also restored a 1980's French Peugeot (Much Higher Model). He showed it to me, beautiful! He stated that my repair was 100% successful, though he would have used new parts ($35 Parts $25 alignment), and offered to go to bat for me with Mayflower...

Mayflower then told me that their decision was final, and they would not contact or abide by either bike shop's evaluation... and if I didn't like it, I could dispute their decision with their industry review board, as long as I didn't cash the check they were sending....

I called the "Review Board" Left voicemail.... No one ever called me back.......

YES, FOLKS, I'm Venting!!! If you feel it is necessary, go ahead and delete this post......

The one saving grace is that Bike Shop #2 indicated that the work I did was 100% Successful.... The bike works... No metal fatigue is indicated in the repair or alignment....

I cashed the check.... Thanks for letting me Vent!

I appreciate you sharing your experience. Consider posting it on Angie's List for Chicago. (You don't have to be a member to post a review.) And maybe Yelp, though I'll warn you, if you've never posted a review on Yelp, they will treat your first review as a throwaway (figuring you had a hidden agenda, like working for a competing moving company). Yelp usually puts a member's first review in a hidden area, so if you want your Mayflower moving company review to be seen, review a couple of other businesses positively first.. like a couple of restaurants which already have lots of Yelp reviews back in Chicago, so you won't care if they don't take those seriously. Then post the Mayflower one a few days later.

Welcome to NC!

/fellow Chicago-area refugee... though we wanted warmer conditions and picked the opposite side of the state!
