Some thoughts

Just to be sure...your memory card contained the map you use, and the card is now physically gone. Is this correct?

Did you check to see if a map is present? Even if your preferred map was on a SD card that's now lost, there may be a internal map that could be selected. Go to Tools/Settings/Map/MapInfo (I think) and tell is what maps are listed in Map info. If there is a map present, is it checked? Checking a map will return your nuvi to being able to display a detailed map and be able to search for destinations.

Was the memory card one you used to install the desired map or was the card a Garmin-supplied SD card purchased with the pre-installed map? Tell us more how you put a map on the old SD card or what you purchased from Garmin. I'm guessing that the lost map is of South Africa. If not, let us know what map you had.

If the map on the lost SD card was a Garmin-purchased map, the solution is to buy a new one. Alternately, you could look at the OSM site and download a replacement for your nuvi:

https://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=5/51.500/-0.100

I don't think the nuvi 7x0 series offers automatic map updates to a SD card so I'm curious if you had a map on the SD card, how it was installed. One last question: does the nuvi have a lifetime map update subscription? Most likely, this would have been a separate purchase which was added to your nuvi.

DATA LOSS

HI

Thank you Graig,

this gps was given to as gift since my first garmin was faulty in order to move around, for the very first time i used it the memory card was inserted in. when I pulled it out I had a message on the screen "No Data is available" when the card inserted the map could display.

it was displaying the southern countries of Africa ( south Africa,Zimbabwe,Malawi,Zambia.Namibia...)

from you advice, I went tools>Settings>Map there no list of map.

one thing I motice is on the screen if I press on map i will see only the car on the empty area no roads or streets on display.

Open street map?

There is probably no way to get your old map data back. If you want the official Garmin City Navigator map, you would need to purchase it (card or download) from Garmin.

As an alternative, you could try installing an Open Street Map for your desired locations. Open street maps are free.

When you see the car with no detailed streets, you're probably using the nuvi's world-wide basemap. The basemap can not do routes or anything leaving you with the No Data response when trying to find a location.

As has been said, your alternatives now are to buy from Garmin (map download or pre-loaded SD card), or to install a free OSM map on a new SD card.

One thing to remember with SD card is that they should be inserted/removed when the nuvi is powered down. A SD card and its contents could be damaged if inserting or removing the card when the nuvi is powered.

Good luck with getting a map installed or deciding if maybe you feel it's time for a newer model.

Baai.

@jbtuzya

I am assuming that you did not make a backup before this occurred. If you do purchase another SD card with a map, please do a backup of both the nuvi and the SD card.

Backup of card.

Doing a backup is always good advice, but please be aware that on a Garmin map card with a preinstalled map, the map is locked to the card it came on. So the map cannot be restored to a different card. Therefore, the backup will not do you any good unless you have the original card. The backup is still a good idea though, in case the original map data gets damaged or accidentally deleted. In that case you could restore from the backup to the original card.

(jgermann, I am sure you already know this information, but thought it needed to be stated to clarify your post.)
