2016.10 happy with it

Took my 2797 out for a run today. So far I'm very happy with the new map. I even have to admit I kinda like the split screen vs the full screen JCV. It kicked in where I've never seen it do so.

Aside from showing outdated POI stores, gas stations and restaurants, the actual map is getting better every time.

New map changes.

I have installed the new map with no problems. However I have yet to see anything new. Has anyone found actual new POI or highways? Maybe there is a website where all updates are listed.

changes

I am taking my car for a ride today through an area with some significant road and interchange construction recently completed to see if they were included in the updates.

Some changes

They added the new roundabout in my town. There are still some changes not included yet. They don't have a new road (and major change of another road) in Green Lake, WI nor do they have the new speed limits in Wisconsin. Maybe next update.

smal things

As usual, you have to remember, that changes in roads comes to maps with simpler rules: bigger roads get on maps faster than small roads. Some changes on small roads can take years to show on new maps. You can always try speed up this process by reporting change to Garmin.

2016.10 CN

The new map became available the day After I returned from a 1600 mile trip. Haven't used my 2597 for any actual navigation yet but so far haven't seen any significant changes. Still have one major road where the speed limit was lowered about 4 years ago still showing the old limit but haven't seen it updated anywhere else either. Guess I'll find out next time I take a day trip just what the new map has changed.

i took it out for a test

Was very disappointed it didn't know the paved roadways for my golf cart at the country club. razz

The DEM file.

Someone, somewhere posted that the DEM file was new for this release. Of course very few units use it, the 3597 being one of the ones that do. Just took a little outing to the Western part of my state and decided that the contrast and shading had been increased, the hills were more pronounced, or was this some sort of optical illusion? Anyway I still like this feature very much.

.

Took my new map update out for a short (200 mile) roadtrip today and noticed that there appeared to be more detail in some of the side-streets we drove by than before. I thought it was my imagination at first, but my wife was the first one to mention it (she spends more time actually watching the map than I do obviously).

It also seemed to track more smoothly than before (on my 2599LMT-HD), but again, that may be my imagination.

Anyway, quite happy with it in the few hours I've driven with the update...

My 3790 uses the original (first release ~1.1 GB in size) DEM file which did NOT get replaced by the 2016.10 update.

My 3490 uses the smaller (~800 MB in size) DEM file which did NOT get replaced either.

Good to know

I won't really need mine until a trip to Florida in September but glad to know no one has encountered anything drastic.

I left mine deleted after the 2015.40 update on the 3790. I haven't missed it, and gain a gigabyte in space. I win. grin

I've always preferred the split screen, nice to be able to not only see the exits signs but beyond them as well.

Yep, the map is fine but POI's are lacking. At least we can add some.

Lacking

I have lots of POI's showing, but of course the only ones I can ascertain the correctness of, are in my vicinity.
In that case there are more in error than correct. Such as non-existing gas stations as part of a convenience store, stores that have been defunct for years, shut down restaurants, non-existing banks etc.

This may be a problem for you unless you have recently applied other updates such as software updates to your device. Garmin's map update policy states that a device is considered to be out of service if no updates have been downloaded and installed for 24 months.

Updates correctly capture road changes

In my area of central VA the new updates got all the recently completed construction and interchanges updated correctly. We have an odd, diverging double diamond interchange at I64 and 15 that always made it look like you were in oncoming traffic updated as well.

Thanks

for all the reports on the new update. Will go ahead an download it this afternoon..... Will not really get a chance to test it out until October when we head off on a month long trip checking out fall foliage.

Travel Safe!!

It seems the latest update...

It seems the latest update corrected some routing issues I noticed with the 2015.40 update. I'm happy with that.

But I am curious as to what happens after this year when Garmin has to renew it's HERE maps contract with the new owners... Gonna be interesting.... I hope Garmin makes it work because as far as accuracy nothing beats HERE in the Continental U.S. in my opinion.

Updated mine

I have a nuvi 5000 and the new update looks great hads a lot of new street and fix freeways

Nice

It's nice that it's been worth the long wait!

Downloaded today and will

Downloaded today and will check it out going to Disney this weekend.

POI's

That is probably the biggest issue with the Garmin maps. POI's in my area are terribly outdated. I am not sure where they scavenge the business information from but it is old.

SUPPOSITION MODE ON:

I suspect most of the POI's loaded in the GPS are really things that a company paid to have included in a map build for Some number of map updates.

Seems like a reasonable way to garner additional revenue from companies as both locations where ad information about company x resides as well as a location to be found via, name or category.

For example you can say find place DOUBLE TREE HOTEL and it might find several in tour General area.

You might also say find catagory, then lodging then hotels and find DOUBLE TREE as an entry or at the loging prompt ask for DOUBLE TREE.

I've tried it several ways and it seems to work.

But we're likely going to agree Garmin didn't do this out of the goodness of their hearts. BTW, some of these built in POIs have the phone number associated with them although I've not figured out how to have the GPS call the location via my stupid phone!

SUPPOSITION MODE OFF!

POI errors

Actually it's like this BarneyBadass.

If for example you click on search for gas stations in my area it will correctly show them but in addition to that it will also list convenience stores, grocery stores etc which have absolutely nothing to do with gas stations and never ever been associated with one.

And it's been like that for years with the Garmin POI's.
