How can you tell if your GPS is being charged when hooked up to a computer? It shows the picture of a GPS hooked up to a computer. I know if I am using it that will take a long time to charge but I'm not using the unit while plugged in. Has been plugged in for a couple of hours and when I disconnect, it's still at 2 bars. I know we have been through this before, but not long ago, I slightly bent the plugin.

I think you may have a problem. You may be able to test if the unit charges using a cell phone charger. Turn the unit on so it displays the start page with the battery indicator at the top then connect a cell phone charger. Many will act as if it were plugged into the car's outlet.

The battery's probably shot
I have a Nuvi 1450 and for at least the last four years the battery will not charge. It works fine plugged into the cigarette lighter but if I start it without the plug the battery indicator shows maybe one bar and the message that the battery is depleted comes on. I've lived with it because it still works great plugged into the lighter or a USB port on my laptop. I'm not about to buy a new battery and then try to change the battery in the unit.

Bad battery risk.
There is some risk in using a nuvi with a dead battery when you apply a software update. The second stage of installing the update requires disconnecting the nuvi from the computer and rebooting the nuvi to allow the unit to complete the update. If your nuvi dies in the middle of the update it can brick it. The workaround is to plug it into your car charger to complete the second stage of the update.
