What Custom POIs Do You Use?

As posted above, I am just wondering what Custom POIs people here use and why? I have been a member here for some time now and I find that I have weaned myself back to fewer and fewer as time goes on. I find that restaurants and gas stations are often already in my GPS mapping software.

On the other hand, unique custom POIs can be handy. For example, as an amateur radio operator, being able to locate nearby repeater frequencies can be handy. Even the NOAA weather radio stations. I liked the AM/FM broadcast files back in the day, but I listen to terrestrial radio so rarely that it is almost not worth having those POIs.

Anyway, what do my fellow members here like to use?

Here's an older thread that may offer some answers

here are my favs!

There are a few that haven't been updated for quite some time and I know there are updates tried contacting the creators but no answers which is too bad!!

Best Western Locations USA
WalMart, Sam's Clubs, and Super WalMart Centers
Rest Areas Combined
Flying J/Pilot Travel Plazas
Target Stores In The United States & Canada
Harley Davidson Dealers for US & Canada
Best Western Hotels - Canada
Royal Canadian Legion Branches
Canada Rest Stops
Costco US and Canada
Canadian Tire
Tim Horton's Restaurant US & Canada
LCBO ONTARIO CANADA
Travel Centers of America Truck Stop Plazas

I Limit What I load

I limit the POIs that I load to the ones that I need at the time. If I'm on vacation in the US, I load Rest Stops Combined, Drury Hotels, Court Hotels, Hampton Hotels and Holiday Inn. Also Cheesecake Factory, Steak & Shake, Bob Evans. General Motor Dealers

When I return, I delete these files to cut down on extraneous POIs.

I always have the following loaded: Rest Areas Ontario, Canadian Tire Gas Stations, General Motors Canada.

I have no need for Tim Horton's because there's one on every other corner anyway, in Canada.

Other than that, I have no need for many others and definitely only put proximity alerts on the Rest Areas. I don't need a ding ding coming up for a donut shop, gas station or Walmart.

Plenty

Depends on the trip. I'll load what I need for the pending trip. Otherwise I have very few, if any custom POI loaded on the device.

I use all sorts of POI files to cover the routes and destination. The most frequently used is probably Rest Areas Combined.

Most POI I Use

Rest Areas
McDonalds
Red Light Camera

Unplanned stops I might want on a trip

My Nuvi is mostly used for trips, often on routes I already know. I load a handful of POI files for places I might decide I want to stop at. That includes Rest Stops, major gas chains, fast food (and not so fast) chains, and Walmart. Therefore when I get hungry and decide I would like McDonalds, I can easily locate the next one. If I knew where I was stopping before I left home, I would not need the POI files.

My POI's

From this site I use the Rest Area and Red Light Camera POI's. I also have POI's that I created for Nassau County, NY fire departments, police stations and Town of Oyster Bay Parks.

I provided the last update to the radio station POI file and I should rerun the database routines to create a new one. It is going on 5 years now...

Love the rest area poi and campground ones.

State Lines & Borders

Most of the POI's I need are already on my Garmin Drivelux. I did add State Lines and Borders. I hate driving north and not knowing how far I am from the next state. Driving south its not a problem.
I'm 920 miles from the nearest Tim Horton's. That's a bummer.

Red Light Cameras is the

Red Light Cameras is the only one I use.

***(RLC-SC) / Hot Dogs / BBQ

***(Red Light / Speed Cameras)

In no particular order. grin

Things change

I use:

red light and speed cameras
ExxonMobil / Shell / Valero stations
McDonald's / Taco Bell / Panda Express / DQ / Shipley Donuts
Taco Bell
Holiday Inn / La Quinta / Marriott

I have personal POIs also

Mostly, I really like have the most current list of gas, food, lodging stops possible, as over time, new places are created and some old ones shut down. As an example, I was traveling in WVa, stopped at an Exxon - and it had paper signs over the logos and BP in its place. Things change, need real time information.

Changes often .....

But a few always make the list and are used regularly:

Red Light Cameras
Speed Cameras
Rest Areas with restrooms
State Lines and Borders
Eastern Tolls USA

I even use a real old POI for I-95 Speed Traps(2012). It not only serves as a reminder at obvious places but surprisingly still is accurate at times. Unfortunately, driving on long trips becomes mechanical (some say hypnotic) and speed tends to increase unintentionally. The customized alert helps break the mechanical tendency.

All are installed with customized alerts ..... helps with all sorts of preparations wink

the Home Depot POI data base.

--
RKF (Brookeville, MD) Garmin Nuvi 660, 360 & Street Pilot

I use ...

... RedLight and Speed Cameras, Rest Areas, Cracker Barrel and a few others.

The usual and then some

I use the usual POI-Factory suspects: Red Light Cameras, Speed Cameras, Rest Areas, and State Lines. Then I add my own: (Airedale Terrier) Club Members, my Bank's Branches, Family & Friends, Gander Mountain (I'm the author, so it's mine), Health Care, city and county Parks, Restaurants & Bars, local Speed Traps, and finally, my most-beloved one, Wineries (over 600 of those babies).
If memory serves, I have something over 10,000 individual locations.

I Love The POI's Here!

I live in Florida and travel all over the state as a photojournalist and outdoors fishing writer. I love the POI files here at this site and use them regularly. Some of the one's I use are:

Bank of America (Formerly Well's Fargo)
Wal-Mart
CVS
Walgreens
Publix Florida
Sports Authority
Gander Mountain
Bass Pro Shops
Dicks Sporting Goods
Columbia Outlet Store
Fishing Piers US
Florida Saltwater Boat Ramps
Tampa Area Boat Ramps
Martin County FL Waterfront Access Fishing
Bealls Stores
Bealls Outlets
Dunkin Donuts
Pizza Hut USA/Can
Florida Highway Patrol Posts
Ford Dealers/Service
McDonalds USA
Burger King USA
Speed Cameras
Red Light Cameras
I-4 Speed Traps

I see I need to add Taco Bell and I should add Popeye's Chicken, if there is one for that too. I don't eat a lot of fast food, but sometimes on the road you just have to. The Publix deli and their hot case food meals are a live saver on the road.

I rely heavily on custom poi

I rely heavily on custom poi files such as Fast food restaurants like McDonald, Burger King, Tim Hortons, Star Bucks, US and Canada rest stops, LCBOs, beer stores, red light cameras, Costco, Walmart and lot more. The advantage of adding them with BMP files is that they show up my map while driving in the area. It is really handy to find fast food on the map when my 8 years old gets hungry in the car..lol

Iphone XR, Drivesmart 61,Nuvicam, Nuvi3597

Ones I don't "preplan" to use.

Besides cameras, mine are almost exclusively things I don’t preplan to use. So that means rest stops, fast (and not so fast) food chains, gas stations, Walmart, etc. When I am far from home and want to stop I can select my preferred merchant and see all those coming up without be overwhelmed with their competitors.
