Auburn ditches red-light cameras

Posted by Lisa Cowan

Auburn has decided to get rid of its unpopular red-light cameras.

KOMO-TV reports the Auburn City Council voted 4-3 to no longer contract with a private company that operates the program.

Mayor Nancy Backus says traffic statistics show lights installed at four busy intersections have not reduced collisions since the program started in 2006.

Backus was on the council eight years ago and among those who supported the program. Auburn was the first municipality in the state to adopt photo enforcement at traffic lights.

Statistics show the number of accidents and injuries at those intersections has not changed since the cameras were installed. But the number of people running red lights has decreased.

Some, including the mayor, believe that alone makes the streets safer.

Could it be?

That red light running went down, but panic stop rear ending accidents went up?

if it's about safty

Revoke their drivers licenses

More Cities will Follow Auburn

More cities are also going to remove RLCs as they get more data and as courts continue to rule against camera tickets not issued by badged officers.

It's Possible

Could it be that panic stop rear-ending accidents are replacing T-bone accidents in the middle of the intersection?

All not surprising!

it all seems not that surprising!
Just Sayin!

Panic Stops

Interesting about the panic stops versus the t-bone accidents.

Over 8 years RLC don't reduce accidents.

In other news, water's wet. grin

It was never about safety,

It was never about safety, but politicians know you can get money (or revenue) for anything in the name of safety. If everyone would stop running red lights, the revenue generator would turn into an expense leading to its removal.

Bang On!

...and if that doesn't work, make something up about "the children".

Unfortunately we are condemned to tolerate these bleeding heart do-good'ers despite their pushing of conceptual (and usually harmful) solutions. The original intent of red light cameras, while well-intentioned, was quickly identified as a hazard for those willing to admit it .... others are just enslaved to the concept of revenue at any cost. Yet, these are the same people who condemn capitalism.

Thivery ? If there is a red jagged line under a word when you write, it means you misspelled it. Thievery

I was typing fast and must have missed it. Only get the redline on the MAC and not the PC for some reason.

In many bushels of apples you will always find some rotten ones but you don't throw out the whole batch.
Only the people who break the law pay the fine so don't break the law. The people who run into the car in front stopping for a red light should be charged with tailgating which is illegal in most areas.
I did once get a running a red light citation but it was while the car was in a body shop getting fixed because a woman ran a stop sign. The body shop took care of me. Fix the thievery problem but keep the cameras.

Ever since I have been a member on this site, I have seen others claiming that cameras should be outlawed because they "cause rear end accidents to increase".

Exactly how does the camera "cause" an accident?

If a child runs into the roadway and a car "slams on its brakes" to stop but the following car does not and rear-ends the first car, do we blame the child for the accident?

If a car slows down in order to wait for enough clearance to pass a cyclist ahead and gets rear-ended, do we blame the cyclist? the person who slowed down?

In freeway traffic, when one car rear ends another because the second car was following too close or was distracted by, say, texting, do we blame the freeway? the time of day? all the other drivers? Is the solution doing away with the freeway?

Not Quit Right?
