numi 2598 delete or manage saved / favorites POI's via PC

After adding a bunch of POI's as saved POI to the unit from a PC I would like to know if there is a way to selectively delete them using a PC.

The current.gpx file has all the saved POI's but deleting them from this file does not delete on the unit.

Any help would be apreciated

POI Directory

On my 2450, the Custom POI's are in the POI directory. The files have a GPI extension.

It all depends on how they were loaded (individually or all in one fell swoop). If you loaded them individually, then you should have multiple GPI files, just delete the ones you no longer want.

If you loaded them all at once, then you might have only one GPI file, in which case delete it and reload the ones you wish to keep.

current

cannot be manipulated from a PC as what you have available is a copy of the actual file in protected memory. The only thing you can do is go in through the front panel of the GPS and delete the unwanted ones manually.

You also need to be certain there are no GPX files on the unit as either tour/itineraries or POI lists as the unit will automatically add them back into Favorites.

What PC/computer software did you used to load the POI's initially to your 2598?

Custom POI's are saved to the 2598 in the "\nüvi 2598\Internal Storage\POI" folder (Windows 7). Custom POI's are in the GPI file(s). You can delete this file and the custom POI's will be deleted from the 2598.

The default POI's that are loaded with the maps cannot be deleted (AFAIK).

You can load and remove your own POI's, like for example the Red Light/Speed POI's from this site, using the Garmin POI loader. The loader also allows you to remove any custom POI's on the Nuvi. See the following link for a primer on loading POI's to Garmin units using the Garmin POI loader.

Two different Aspects

I think what you have done is to use your PC to transfer .gpx files onto to your device. When the unit was next booted, the entries in these .gpx files became part of your "Saved Places".
As you have noted, these entries show up in "current.gpx".

As Box Car has indicated, nothing you do from your PC to "current.gpx" will be effective because it is an "output only" file as far as the device is concerned.

As Box Car also mentioned, you need to use your PC to find and delete all .gpx files anywhere on the device (or a SD card) just to make sure the device is clean.

An overlooked point is that your device keeps track of .gpx files on the device and only uses the contents of them once. If this were not so, then every time the device was booted, a duplicate of each entry in the file would be added to saved places. However, a "hard reset" would cause the device to load them again because the unit would revert to factory defaults.

Now, the next point is that you cannot use your PC to remove entries from "Saved Places". You must go to the device and follow the instructions in How Do I Delete Or Edit A Favorite On My Nuvi, LIVE, Dezl, RV, Or Camper Series Device? found at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/40052

Thanks for the information.

So I guess the only way to eliminate obsolete saved places without manually deleting each one on the unit would be to extract all saved items to be kept from current.gpx and save these to a new file. Then on the unit - deleted all saved places, and then copy the new file onto the unit.

Saved places vs custom POIs

I had first assumed your question was about Custom POIs loaded with POI Loader. Now I'm revising my thought and think you want to selectively delete Saved Places or Favorites.

I'm not sure how it works on your 2598, but on my newer Garmin nuvis, I can tap WhereTo/Saved, then tap the three horizontal lines and this will bring up a window letting me Delete Saved Places or Cancel. If you tap Delete Saved Places, it'll bring up a list of all your Saved Places probably in alphabetical order, with a topmost "Select All." You can check the boxes for individual Saved Places to be removed, then Delete all the checked places. This is all done without the need for a computer.

The other option I can think of is to have all of your saved places imported to your computer's Mapsource or BaseCamp progam. Then on the computer, delete the Saved Places no longer desired. Then after deleting all Saved Places on the nuvi (the above technique can do that in a few taps), export the kept Saved Places back to the nuvi.
