Garmin units compared, at cheap prices, to replace my old one.

So, my Garmin Nuvi 1690 is on borrowed time. It's worked OK but the nulink service is going off the air in a few months. The google local is already gone, but the traffic I consider essential here in Southern California.

And the darned mount falls off the window every couple days, poor manufacturing. And no, I don't want a recommendation for a third party unit that might work better. Heh. We discussed that here ad nauseum. Garmin has replaced it four times.

I have a Nuvi 1300 with lifetime traffic, so I could just start using that again. But I thought I'd ask:

This site has some cheap prices on refurb 4.3 inch garmin units. I was looking at buying something else from then when I noticed all the garmin stuff.

So my question is, there are all these different models.
I can get a 4.3" unit with lifetime maps and traffic for about $95-$100, with free shipping.

So what does anyone recommend, or should I just buy whatever is the newest, which might make sense?

Although it is "greyed out" you can say View List and go directly to a list with line numbers and a down (page forward) option. With my British accent I have to use it often.

I'm so disapointed these units don't understand common PROFANITY!!! razz

Never argue with a pig. It makes you look foolish and it anoys the hell out of the pig!

I see the Garmin nüvi 2557LMT for $99

I see the Garmin nüvi 2557LMT for $99, with free shipping from Frys and Amazon.

It's possible that the main difference between that one and the Garmin Nuvi 2598LMTHD for about $20 more is the latter has the HD traffic, whatever that is.

The 2557LMT does work with the way overpriced ($170) BC-30 wireless backup camera. I may order one of those, and see if the backup camera ever comes down.

Not that I need it or can justify it at all.

Oh well.

Not Garmin

but just seen this ad at solidsignal.com for a Refurbished Magellan Roadmate 4.3" with lifetime updates and traffic. (RM2230RGLUC) for $44.99 today only

Yeah, well, it's been a while since I have actually used the old 1300, I have been using the 1690.

Interestingly, the 1300 was stolen from my car in a window smash and grab. Then it was recovered by the local police and returned to me! Gee whiz, that almost never happens.

It was only because I had the serial number for the police report. In my garmin account!

I looked, good price, good unit.
Factory Refurbished, Full Manufacturer Warranty

They finally turned off the nulink service.

They finally turned off the nulink service. About a month later than announced. I think it stopped working about 4/7/15.

So now my 1680 has no traffic. I put the 1300 back in the car.

It's kind of shocking. The screen is so much brighter than the 1680. But the routing is a little nuts.

I am back on Magellan.

I was at the computer swapmeet last weekend, and I bought a brand new Magellan unit, same size screen as my Garmin 1680, with lifetime traffic and maps.

It came with a red light and speed camera database and alerts. I paid $20 for it.

I even bought a spare they were so cheap.

I have to say, compared to my older Garmin units, this is quite useable. The search by name is much faster. Screen is nice. On screen keyboard is much easier to use than my Garmins, 1300 and 1680. Big selection of programmable one touch destinations.

Magellan is owned by Mitac Digital, the makers of those cheap MIO gps units. So it's probably really a mio reskinned to appear to be a Magellan.

I used to have Magellan. So this is interesting.

I may still buy a fancier Garmin unit if any present themselves, maybe black friday, which isn't too far away now!

Wow that's a good price.

First trip with Magellan unit

I did my first trip with the Magellan unit.
The suggested routing was different than the Garmin.

It wanted me to go a way I would never go on my 290 mile drive.
But I do believe it's shorter the other way, but two lane roads through small towns instead of the interstate.

Some of the magellan searching is very fast. One, I couldn't find the address until I tried putting the street in differently. Odd. Not as logical as Garmin. Faster, though. But admittedly my Garmins were older units, probably better now.

Love my 2598LMTHD

How much is a new one vs. refurbished?
