Windows 10

Microsoft introduced Windows 10 on September 30. Technical preview is now available for download at http://preview.windows.com

Skipped 9

Quote on the news talking about this, quoted MS as saying they were skipping 9 so that everyone would know it was a really big change from Win 8.

Remember When...

A new release of Windows was such a big event people camped out in front of the stores to get a copy?

Now a Windows release is barely newsworthy. I guess very few have updated since Windows of many, many years ago.

It's more revealing about how Windows 8 acceptance & sales have been going.

Win XP Pro & Win 7 are the recent high points & Microsoft knows it.

Fred

Glad to know

I'm to busy to keep up with anything any more. I'm sure glad I saw this. Otherwise, whenever I realized Win10 was out I would have thought I just missed the whole Win9 saga.

The START BUTTON and DESKTOP are back. They didn't mention if 2010 Office would work did they?

I couldn't watch the video

This is not a release to the public just a preview to tech net

Unlike apples recent not ready for prime time release of IOS 8 that was so bad they had to quickly pull it from download availability this windows 10 is just a preview not meant for general distribution yet.

This is not the release of windows 10 just a preview for the enterprise tech net people. I received my monthly email today they sent out announcing preview info for a number of different software future releases. I have been in their tech net and have been getting previews and betas of all their software for years.

This is not a release to the public just to tech net people to preview the windows 10 and provide feedback:

"Today we begin the process of sharing our plans with enterprise customers. We are doing this earlier than we’ve done in the past, because it’s important that our business customers have insight into our product vision. Their insight and feedback is critical as we build products to best meet their needs. Some of what we are working on will show up in the Windows 10 Technical Preview we’ll release on October 1st, and some will come in subsequent updates. "

Screen grab showing the main screen and the menu opened up showing the familiar windows 7 menu with some of the windows 8 features also available.

I tried to install 10, from the Technical preview access and it downloaded it, installed it and after two hours of setting it up, it said it couldn't install it on my computer. So frustrating. It was a computer that I was running windows 7 and I had plenty of space left on my hard drive. It didn't tell me why it couldn't complete the install.

window 9/10

First the good news..

Window 9 THE FINAL VERSION will be released in april 2015,what you see ( RIGHT NOW )is just a BETA version they want people to try but they are suggesting on Installing on a separate PC.( that one you do not care much if things go wrong)

Now microsoft are still working a final decisions on what to do when the new operating system will be out so this is what are the working on the date of releasing the new window

1) make free for all window 7 and window 8 users.

OR
2) Make only free for Window 8 users to cover up for the window 8 fiasco

OR

3) Make possible for window 7 users to update to window 9 for only $30.00

Now here it come the bad news..

Window 9 and Window 10 (avail..by the end of 2015) only will work with window 64 and 128 bits Operating System PC, for those who have the 32 bits you are out of luck.

Hmmmmmm

Basically sounds like a Garmin or Apple update...toss crap out for the public and wait for the complaints.

"You can't get there from here"

It's ye 'ol MSFT OS "rule of 3:"

1. Well known rule: "every third MSFT OS' is worth using. To wit: DOS 3.3; Win 95; Win XP; Win 7 (if you must). Do the simple math (their product positioning) and Win 7+3 = Win 10, thus avoiding the standoffish skepticism of a Win 9.

2. There was a long standing joke for awhile: "Win 9 was actually fully developed and was so good that the version was going to be kept within MSFT programmers themselves & the development team was going to go directly to a Win 10 for G.P. release.

3. We'll see if it will be a Win 11.13 to wait for (see #1). wink

yeah...

Wrong. It is an unfinished, "a work in progress" software as Joe Belfiore (Windows VP) says in the video. It's a tech preview (pre beta) version. They're releasing this version early to get feedback from users.

9 skipped for a reason

98 was good
Windows ME was awful
Win XP was very good
Windows Vista was awful
Win 7 was ok to good
Windows 8 was awful

People were claiming that 9 would be good and then 10 would be awful.

I think Microsoft just decided to skip the good one and get to the next awful one. Time will tell.

Yes...

Back to the future

MS should give Windows XP a refresh. Kinda scary how something so important can go so awry.

Quite revealing how many are still running XP.

For 64-bit installations of Windows 10 Technical Preview for Enterprise, a small number of older PCs will be blocked from installing the preview because they don't support CMPXCHG16b, PrefetchW, and LAHF/SAHF.

One other note: this is only a BETA. This is only an evaluation. It isn't meant to be put on a computer for everyday use. I'm using VirtualBox to install it as a virtual computer. That way it won't mess up my computer for everyday use.

By your logic, you must really love Windows 8, since from XP there as Vista, then 7, then 8.

No error message?

I tried to install the 32bit version on my 9 years old laptop (1.8GHz, 1.2GB RAM). I got no problem installing Win 8 beta on this laptop a couple of years ago. Win 10 preview fails to install with error code 0xc0000260.

win 10

well I tried to install it from the ms download and the install failed, so I got the 64 bit iso and it installed fine played with it for a while installed steam and a few games. well I liked it start button was good speed loading games was good playing games no lag over all was good, then at about 4th or 5th restart is said I had corrupt drives and offered to repair them for me" I clicked ok" upon rebooting when finished it couldn't find a working os !!
so I ran my backup and all is back to normal with my win 7 . so when they get to another beta with more of the bugs removed I will try it again. over all I liked it its better then win 8. on my other puter I have win 8.1 and with all my tweaking you cant tell the dif between win 7 and 8.1 it boots directly to the desktop and I don't have to enter passwords.

Windows 9 is becoming Windows 10?

I am reminded of a paraphrase of Shakespeare - "A large steaming pile of **** by any other name will still smell as bad."

I heard a rumor

johnc wrote:

I heard a rumor that some parts of the MS software world check to see what version of Windows is in use by checking only the first character of the OS name. That meant they interpreted Windows 9 as Windows 98 since in each case the first character is 9. That seems absolutely absurd. Knowing about software writers, it also seems completely believable.

Windows 10

Trying it out, POI Loader and Express installed with no problems.

One Key Question

is can you upgrade over what previous versions.

We'll see whether Microsoft makes that easy or more complex.

So Far So Good

I'm running it in VirtualBox as I don't want to mess up my main PC with a beta operating system. No complaints so far.

Yes, there is a start menu like to old windows, but with tiles too. The tiles can be unpinned so that the menu has a less cluttered look.

I finally convinced my wife to let go of her beloved WinXP desktop. But Win7 is as far as I went (same as my laptop). I have no interest in Win8.
