Nuvi display freezes

The last year or two, my Nuvi 1350lmt display has been freezing. I noticed that it will be working fine until it becomes apparent that the distance to the next turn is not working. Pressing the on-off button once reboots and it continues on just fine.

It mostly freezes on the interstates. I think it is some signal that is doing it. An example is when I pass a certain exit on I-75 that I travel once in awhile it freezes each time. Coming back the opposite way it does not. I have noticed this when going from coast to coast also at various areas, though not frequently. I have not read about anyone having a similar problem and wondered if my Nuvi is just getting old like me grin .
Thx.

A few thoughts

1) Do you have any Custom POIs installed to your nuvi? If so, do you have any alerts set? If so, could a screen freeze occur at a location where a POI alert is expected?

2) Have you cleared your trip log? If not, try that. See p 41:

http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/nuvi_1100_1200_1300_1400_O...

3) Have you enabled ecoroute? (See manual, above.) If so, try clearing ecoroute or disabling it.

4) How much free memory does your device have? Connect to a computer and look for the nuvi as a drive. It should state how much free space the nuvi has. If too small, there may be a problem and you could try making more room. The nuvi 1350 is a 2GB device, so you won't have the largest map possible with a map update unless you have the map installed to a SD card.

5) What map do you have (version and area; e.g., 2015.20; all of North America, Lower 49 States, etc.)? Is the map installed to the nuvi or to a SD card?

6) Have you tried a Hard Reset? A hard reset can fix a lot of flakey issues with Garmin devices.

I've seen that

I used to see a similar kind of "freeze" when following a route and the small display in the lower-left corner was set to ETA. As I recall, it usually continued updating the distance to the next turn (and would announce it correctly), but the map display didn't change. I switched that small display to elevation and the map freezing problem seemed to clear up. I suspect it's just trying to do too many things at the same time.

Nuvi display freezes

Thanks a bunch for the info. I cleared the trip log. It had almost 85k miles on it. Completely forgot about that. Also had many pages of "Recently Found" which was cleared. It does seem to start up faster now.

I have an 8GB micro SD card and a bunch of POI files as I camp from coast to coast a couple of times a year. I hope it is not the memory that is to slow. I think it is one of the faster cards.

I have the lower 49 states map loaded. I don't have any audible alerts on that I know of, so hopefully that is not a problem. Although there is a PPA campground near the exit where the gps freezes, so I will double check that feature.

Next week I will be going by the exit once again and should determine if the changes have cured it of freezing. If not, I will do a hard reset.
Thanks again for the info,

Nuvi display freezes

You are probably correct in that there was a lot of stuff it was keeping up with. Per the repy above, I eliminated some of it and hopefully it will behave now. If not, I will do a hard reset.
Thanks for the suggestions.

What About Free Memory?

You didn't mention how much free memory you have.
As CraigW mentioned, if too little, it can cause problems. The Nuvi needs free space to function properly, exactly how much I don't believe that has bee determined. I think 100MB should be safe.
Perhaps somebody more knowledgeable can jump in and give a recommendation.

Deleting voice files you won't need will increase free memory

As far as SD card speed goes the 8GB card is probably a class 4, which should be just fine.
Using a class 10 will not increase performance since the Nuvi only reads the SD card and doesn't write to it.

Nuvi display freezes

I will remove the voices if more than the one used. I did try several voices, but came back to the one I had been using. I may remove some of the lesser used POI's if the Nuvi continues freezing before a hard reset. I will find out next week by passing by the one of the areas that causes the freeze.
Thanks for the suggestion.

How Much Free Memory?

You still haven't indicated how much free memory is available.

Whenever you remove any files please have a full backup of your Nuvi in case you accidentally remove something you shouldn't.

To all the gurus out there, I've always wondered at what speed the average Garmin nüvi is capable in reading. I know that there must be a maximun speed but the reason I ask is because the read speeds of an SD card also greatly vary.

Will the nüvi behave differently using a class 2 card that reads 15MB/s in comparaison to a card that reads 20 or 30 MB/s ?

isn't speed dependent

Isn't speed dependent on several factors? I believe it depends on the bus speed and of course the processor speed. We don't know the processor speed and that can have a bearing on any measurements. There are at least two busses involved, the memory bus and of course the SD Port bus. We could assume the SD Port is an extension of the memory bus, but I don't think that would be true.

Good question but Garmin doesn't provide those specs, it would be helpful to know when purchasing an SD card for maximum performance and not paying more for a higher speed.

Interesting point about processor speed playing a role. I would imagine newer premium units with more features would have a faster processor.

Nuvi display freezing fixed

Backed up GPS and did a hard reset. Copied my favorites and extras back. Drove past the point on I-75 that has caused display to freeze and all is well now. Thanks a bunch for the suggestions.
