Splash Screen for Garmin 2797LMT

I was told I could change the startup splash screen on my new Garmin 2797LMT and that all I had to do was place the jpg into the Pictures folder. My 2797LMT doesn't have a Pictures folder (I was also told to try the JPEG folder but again no-go). Can I just create the Pictures folder or is there more to it than that?

Thanks.

I wonder if all nuvis can do this

Welcome to The Factory. Darn, now I have a craving for a Skyline 4-way and Cheese Coney with Onions...

Garmin says without mentioning the 2597 or any of the new xxx7 or xxx8 series:

It may well be that the 2797 can't easily change the image. Garmin is notorious for offering a feature in one or more nuvi series, then removing it. Can we assume that if you tap Tools, that there is no Picture Viewing icon to tap?

A quick scan through the owners manual doesn't mention it, even on the Customization pages 12-13:

Picture Viewer For Splash Screen

It appears the 2797LMT does not have the ability to change splash screens.

To answer your question "Can I just create the Pictures folder or is there more to it than that?"
The answer is NO. It would do you no good to create a folder with jpg's in it since the 2797 would need a feature to access and change the picture which it doesn't have.

Looking at Craigw's link for the manual it shows no picture viewer. I like to check the index in the manuals to look for features, there is no picture viewer in the index for the 2797.

As an example I have a 2460 and my friend has a 2595.
Checking the index for both manuals for those units shows the picture viewer.

My 2460 came new with a "pictures" folder with 12 useless jpg's, they were promptly deleted and my own copied to the folder.

As CraigW mentioned, Garmin does remove desirable features on some newer units.

splash Screen not applicable due to "instant on"

I believe that the customized splash screen in the 2797LMT is not available because this Garmin features an "instant on" setting and it doesn't boot up like the older units. I asked Garmin about this soon after it came out and they confirmed it wasn't possible.

Splash Screen For Garmin 2797LMT

Thanks for your replies And thanks for the Welcome to The Factory. I just got this unit last week and am still learning about it. I did manage to change the icon for our car. A friend turned me on to this site and I'm glad he did!

Again thanks for all your help.

p.s. I would rather have a 5-way and cheese coney's with everything!

Photo Viewer

When I first got my 2797LMT, it had a photo viewer on it. After software updates, it is gone now. Garmin claimed it never had that capability. With all the competition for GPS products, you would think Garmin would be adding capability not taking it away.....

I wonder if it is like the 3597LMTHD. Garmin will tell you it doesn't have a picture viewer either, but it does ... tucked away on a hidden menu. You get to it by starting on th main map screen. Touch the speed indicator and that gives you the trip log screen. Press and hold the speedometer on that screen for 10 seconds or so and you will get to the hidden Diagnostic menu. Scroll down, and there it is "Picture viewer". It allows you to view pictures stored on the device, but unfortunately does not have the option to designate a splash screen

GARMIN 2797LMT PICTURE VIEWER

Yes there does still seem to be a picture viewer in this Garmin. Just follow the instruction in the pre-seeding post and it will work just fine. Since the touch screen is temper-mental at times, if the last menu fails to appear after 10 seconds, release then press and hold a second time.

Reading the solution to the picture viewer saved me the expense and trouble of finding something else to connect to my laptop which I would have to carry in my motorcycle trunk.

Splash Screen For Garmin 2x97LMT

I would like to add a "IF FOUND CALL (100) 123 4567 OR EMAIL USER@MMM.MMM)" somewhere visible on the unit's screen. I use the unit when walking as well as in the car, if I leave it somewhere, it would be useful if contact info was visible if someone find it.

Yes - could put a label on the unit - but that is tacky and don't want it visible when mounted in the car. I have used customized splash screen on other units.

What I Did

My nuvi has a 480x800 start up/lock screen that I created with the built in Windows Paint Program. It's just a light colored jpg with clear, bold, black text.

It has my info as a "If Found Please Call Or Email" and the info needed. Using a file manager, I just placed the jpg into the Garmin "Pictures" folder. Disconnected, powered up, went into Apps, scrolled down to Picture Viewer, selected the new image and the Three Bar Thingy pops up to allow you to set it as 'Show at Startup' or 'Set as Wallpaper' or Delete/View Slideshow.

Works pretty well. YMMV.

Newer Models don't have pictures

Unfortunately, 2597 and similar models don't have picture capability -
- unless I am missing something

Thanks for the thought

it's still there

The picture viewer is still there and functions perfectly. What's missing is the menu item to get to it. It's buried in the "hidden" menus found in the test and maintenance screens.

Not a product feature

The viewer may be there but as it is hidden could be gone after a future upgrade. In any case can not be used as described in the previous post to create a splash or information screen

Info Screen

With this in mind I've never played with any other nuvi than my own 3590, but it had a "Lock screen" that looks like a green leaf until I changed it via described above.

In this case, I'm wondering if the Garmin unit the OP has also has a lock screen image that can just renamed while in MCP (?) mode and a replacement image (renamed to match the original of course) inserted in its place?
