RE: Need help converting xls file to gpx using apple pc

Does anybody know how to convert an xls file to a gpx file for an apple pc? I just purchased a Garmin Nuvi 2797 that I was instructed to do so by my Assistant District Manager for Prospecting potential clients. I am having a really hard time finding any POI Software that is free and compatible for use with an apple computer. If anybody has any suggestions or words of encouragement, I would certainly appreciate any/all comments.

with the tools

With the tools most of us use, it is difficult for Mac users because the tools are written for a PC. You can get PC software to run using Parallels or something similar, but it may be easier to build a four column CSV file.

If the file already has the locations with the coordinates, you can then build a 4 column CSV by combining fields. The first two columns have to be the Lat/Lon. The third column normally contains the name for the location and the fourth will contain the additional data like address and phone number.

Your 2797 has Bluetooth and can interface with your phone but it will not dial phone numbers from a CSV file. I suggest you download a CSV file from here and use it as a model as to what your file will need to look like.

Click on the LEARN tab and follow the exercises before doing much of anything with your unit. It WILL save you a lot of grief in the future.

Welcome ... Why gpx?

If you do not already have a spreadsheet program on your Apple pc, then ApacheOpenOffice at http://www.openoffice.org/porting/mac/ might be something to look at for reading the file.

Why do you need the POI file to be in .gpx format as .csv will work on your nuvi?

Once again, welcome.

The reason he may need to

The reason he may need to convert XML to GPX is simple: so he can import the GPX file into BaseCamp to do added work on it. Since Mac users have fewer tools available to them, the OP may well be using BaseCamp, which doesn't recognize CSV files. To actually do the conversion from XML to GPX, the OP should head to the GPS Visualizer website and upload his file there. They'll parse the file and create a GPX file from it that he can then use.

How about using converters

Haven't tried it myself, but how about generating CSV from xls, then use following converters.

POI's from CSV to GPX - http://garmin.gps-data-team.com/poi_manager.php

Other POI converters - http://www.gps-data-team.com/convert.php

Except the OP wants to

Except the OP wants to convert from XML to GPX. The OP must have a reason for wanting to do such a conversion, but neither XLS nor CSV will aid in making the conversion.

Her source file apparently is an xls file. (I wonder if she creates it or does she get it from the Assistant District Manager and does it already have the potential client’s coordinates in it.)

However, I think your suggestion of using GPS Visualizer is still the best so far since it can convert directly from xls to gpx

There are several other questions I would like to ask her but wonder if she is going to return here – i.e she may have solved the problem elsewise.

BTW I used she/her because I think the OP's name is Tammy and usually that is a female name.

Ok...time to get my glasses

Ok...time to get my glasses checked. I could have sworn she asked for converting an XML file.
