New to Me Streetpilot 2720

Bought a Garmin Streetpilot 2720 to use on my motorcycle. Came with City Navigator North America NT v8 loaded and included original setup disk with Unit Serial Number, Registration Code and Unlock Code.

Questions One: Bought a new, unopened Map Update on 2009 that successfully shows in MapSource but indicates "Map Detail Locked". When I go to Utilities Managed Map Products it takes me to Map Product Manager which shows the map as Locked and takes me to Unlock Online. Unlock site can find my unit attached to the computer with correct Unit ID. However, if I enter device SN and the product Key on the back of the 2009 update DVD site reports Invalid Product Key. What am I doing wrong?

Question Two: I own City Navigator North America NT 2015.1 which I got from my Nuvi Lifetime updates. It shows unlocked in Map Source. If I select regions on Mapsource and Transfer Maps to unit ti works successfully but when 2720 turns on it indicates Maps Locked. The v8 is still there and usable, tho. What's up with this?

Thanks in advance. The 2720 meets my needs as is but if I can update maps even better!

1. It used to be that there was an 8 (or 9) digit code that came with the map product. Perhaps that is the code that it is looking for.

2. The new maps can only be used with the device they came with. You cannot use them on another device.

Regarding #1 I have the code

Regarding #1 I have the code but it as stated in my post is shows invalid.

Does 2720 device have to be registered to me on Garmin for this to work?

.

Yes, you indicated that you entered the product key, but there also was another code (back in the day) that typically was included on a slip of paper. So, my comment was direct toward whether you were entering the correct code.

I don't think that the device has to be registered, but you might try that if it's not working.

Your next step would likely be a call to Garmin since that's a very old map product.

Randy, I think it would be

Randy, I think it would be best to register the GPS in your name on the Garmin site. This give you the ability to get support for the product even though it is discontinued, and you can purchase map updates and obtain available firmware updates.

The 2720 will accept NuMaps, but not the ones registered to your Nuvi. There are some hacks available to unlock maps, but your best bet is to just get a lifetime map subscription for your GPS. Because memory is limited on the Streetpilot, you will probably only be able to fit the lower 49 states, or a geographic area of your choice through Mapsource. Be sure to do a backup of all GPS files before making any big changes.

As I side note

I really loved my 2720, and wish I still had it.

Street names displayed for every road and custom POI's could be any icon you wanted, not just big green hearts.
