Issues with Nuvi 50LM

First of all, I did a full system backup before I started so I can always go back if I have to.

I offered to update the map on a friend's Nuvi 50LM but made the mistake of not understanding the differences between it and my Nuvi 1450.

Issue #1:
The voices on the 50 have me confused. The are several voices on the 1450 including Jack and Jill which provide TTS. The voices on the 50 include Michelle and Samantha, but looking at the choices after the installation, neither of them indicate that they are TTS. The 1450 shows that Jack speaks street names, for example, but neither Michelle or Samantha show that on the 50.

Question #1:
Does the 50 support TTS? Do Michelle and/or Samantha do TTS? I'd be shocked if they don't but who knows.

Issue #2
On MapUpdater's first attempt at the installation, it informed me that there wasn't enough room in the 50 for all of the lower 49 states. Huh? So I ran over to Best Buy and picked up an 8 GB SD card and installed it. (And yes, both the 50 itself and the SD card are FAT32 and, yes, Win 7 can see both of them.)
But even with the card in, MapUdater still said there wasn't enough room to install the lower 49 states. Say what? So I deleted all of the unnecessary languages, keyboards, voices, etc., and finally MU successfully installed the map. But what has me buffaloed is that nothing was installed on the card, it still all went to the 50.

Question #2
According to this Garmin's page,

http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={18331ce0-4af6-11e3-f27b-000000000000}

all Nuvi's support 8 GB SD cards so why didn't MU use the card so that I wouldn't have had to delete all that stuff?

Issue #3
Comparing the old and new JCV files, the newer one is smaller than the older one:

Old: D3479040A.JCV 133529 kb
New: D3479120A.JCV 110882 kb

Question #3
Does it seem reasonable that the new JCV file is smaller than the old one?

I'd appreciate comments because I'm seriously considering junking what I did and restoring his old system; after all, the only thing he's expecting is some custom POI's.

I'd especially like to hear from Nuvi 50 users who have successfully installed 2015.10 about what issues they had, if any.

Answers and Questions

1. The 2012 Essential series does support text to speech. I suspect that just like the junction view, the voices are specifically for the Essential series, meaning the 13xx and 14xx voices won't work.

2. How much space did Windows say the nüvi had? Is this device a MTP device or does it use mass storage?

3. It would be normal if Garmin reduced the number of views slightly.
