GPS Route from Tracks

I used Basecamp to create a route from tracks and then downloaded the route to my 850. The problem is that the route's display on the GPS is littered with via point flags that were used by Basecamp to create the route.

My question: Is there any way to hide those via point flags from being displayed on the GPS? Maybe some way to massage them in Basecamp before doing the download? rolleyes

No.

The points are called shaping points to force the route to take certain streets/roads. You may be able to reduce the number by editing the route in BaseCamp, but you'll never be able to eliminate them from displaying on your 850.

More Tracks

I installed BaseCamp last night and trying to learn how to use it. I noticed these tracks as well. I tried to find them while viewing the GPS files in Windows Explorer, but could not find them. Where are they and how do I remove them from my GPS?

Nuvi tracks shown in Basecamp.

The nuvi stores a copy of the current trip log (tracks) in \GPX\current.gpx (or \Garmin\GPX\current.gpx depending on your GPS model). There may also be some older track logs in the \GPX\Archive folder. That is probably where Basecamp pulls them from.

Via Points / Shaping Points

I don't mind them being in the display. But I don't like them being shown as big flags. There oughta be some clever way to change them to display as something smaller, like dots, blanks, or circles. Anything that's not as domineering as those big flags are.

Actually, the flags aren't a problem on ordinary route planning because they are few and far between. But when they show up every few hundred feet it screws up reading the display. mrgreen

re: Via Points / Shaping Points

You may be able to change the flag to a dot through playing with the file. It's HTML so you need to look for the symbol entry and change it to something like the small blue dot.

Using Extra_POI_Editor, you can do this easier as it does have a global "search and destroy" in the Replace all command. The number of points can also be reduced significantly in Base Camp while editing the track. Start deleting points until the route changes, then go back and put in the last point removed. It's a laborious process, but very doable.

Small Blue Dot

That would fix it.
Thanks for your suggestion, Box Car. I'll diddle around with it and see if I can come up with something.
