Paste function not working with Extra POI Editor

I've searched this forum to see if anyone else is having a problem with the paste function when using Extra POI Editor (v5.91) -- and if so, if they've found a cure for it.

When I use EPE to open a Favorite from my current.gpx file, I can't paste text into the fields in EPE's POI Edit window. This happens whether I'm editing an existing Favorite or creating a new one. If I reboot my system, the fields will start accepting pasted text -- but only for a short time. (I haven't been able to determine what is going on when the paste function again stops working. As far as I can tell, it just stops working.)

I'm running Windows 7 Professional.

Many thanks in advance for any help someone can offer.

No paste pbm with EPE 5.91

I am not having any "Paste" problem with EPE. I just hooked up my 765 to the computer and took the option to "Open folders....". I navigated to the Garmin/GPX folder and used EPE to open the "current.gpx" file. I opened a favorite and got the "POI Edit" dialog. I flipped to a Word document and copied some text, then back to EPE and pasted the text. I saved the file and then looked at it in Wordpad and the paste had taken

I am wondering exactly what you did. Give us more information.

Tell us whether you can open some .gpx file from this site and paste info into it using EPE.

Realize that editing "current.gpx" will have no effect as this file is an "output only" file to your device.

To add new "favorites" you can add a .gpx file to Garmin/GPX and it will merge with "current.gpx" on the next boot.

Paste function not working with Extra POI Editor

Thanks for your replies, jgermann and Box Car.

«I am wondering exactly what you did. Give us more information.»

In Extra POI Editor I double-click a Favorite to open its POI Edit window. Then I try to copy text (from Notepad or Outlook or Mozilla Firefox or Word) and paste it into the fields in the POI Edit window. I've tried right-clicking to copy and paste, as well as using Ctrl-C, Ctrl-X and Ctrl-V. None of those results in a successful paste. Oddly, I am able to copy text FROM a field in EPE's POI Edit window TO another application. Just not the reverse.

«Realize that editing "current.gpx" will have no effect as this file is an "output only" file to your device.»

I'm afraid I don't understand what an "output only" file is, jgermann. I'm able to open my Favorites in EPE, edit them, then save the current.gpx file back to my Garmin unit. All the edits show up just fine on the Garmin unit. And I did try opening a gpx file from the POI Factory website. Same result: could not paste text into the fields in their POI Edit windows, either.

I am reminded now that I was also unable to paste text into another application, the genealogy program Legacy. Their customer support told me they'd come across a few rare instances of that, but were never able to resolve the problem.

editing current.gpx

@Casey Until I read your post it had been my understanding that the current.gpx was a report of the favorites stored in internal memory and that changes to the file would not change the data in internal memory.

This morning I used EPE 5.91 to directly edit the current.gpx on two of my Garmins (255W and 285W) and experienced the following:

Changes made to the phone number and City Name in current.gpx caused the changes to be made in internal memory - I could tell because the changes remain after deleting current.gpx and restarting the Garmins.

Also I found that changing the Name of a favorite using EPE caused a new favorite to be created on the garmins - and I saw that there was no temp.gpx involved.

Deleting a Favorite using EPE had no effect on the Favorites stored on the Garmins.

BTW I have no problems with paste function in EPE while using Windows 8.1

I'll be darned

When I read your post, Evert, I thought that could not possibly be - but you are right.

Deleting a POI has no effect. Any deleted will show up.

BUT changing certain fields (including coordinates) in current.gpx using EPE while the device (in this case my 765) is attached to the computer will cause that change to occur to the device so long as the file in EPE is "saved" before safely disconnecting.

Changing the name adds a favorite.

HOWEVER similar actions did not impact my 2595.

Help us out, folks. This seems to be true on certain devices but not others.

Others test this out and let us know your results.

adding more favorites

Also I found that I could add more favorites by opening the current.gpx file on my 285W with EPE, do a merge open on another filename.gpx file and then direct save back to the garmin.

I added the over 3800 POIs of POI Factory's VFW.gpx file to Favorites that way.

It is odd that it does not work if I save the same EPE created current.gpx file to my computer first then copy it to my garmin.

I did this on my 1350 last year

I edited a favorite. I fine tuned the latitude and longitude and saved back to the same favorite name in the current.gpx. What I expected was not what I got. I expected the name to be the same. It wasn't. A one (1) was attached to the name of the favorite.

changing coordinates

pwohlrab,

I get similar results as you did when I edit the coordinates of a favorite in the current.gpx file on my 255W and 285W but the name change is for new favorite that is created while a favorite remains for the old name and location.

Back to the OPs Problem...

Paste works fine for me with EPE 5.91. when editing a favourite from the current.gpx file on the GPS, or entries in other .gpx files.

CaseyGuy, when the paste problem happens in EPE, can you successfully paste text into other programs?

If you have not done so, I would suggest that you uninstall EPE and then re-install it.

Paste function not working with Extra POI Editor

«I would suggest that you uninstall EPE and then re-install it.»

Thanks for the suggestion, jgermann. I tried it, but it didn't work: still can't paste anything into EPE's POI Edit fields.

Re: the discussion on duplicate entries and difficulty deleting Favorite records with EPE: Luckily, I've had no problem with that; the changes, deletions and additions that I make with EPE do show up in my Favorites file at the end of the day. My workflow is this:

1. Copy current.gpx from my nüvi 250W's internal memory to my hard drive.
2. Open the _copy_ with EPE, and make the necessary changes, deletions and additions.
3. Save the file.
3. Copy the edited file back to my nüvi 250W.

As you are about the only ne experiencing the problem with pasting, I suggest you try unistalling with the Revo Uninstaller. Uninstall doesn't touch many registry entries and it may be there the problem lies from an earlier bad install.
Uninstall using Revo.
Run a program such as CC Cleaner and have it scrub the registry.
Rerun Revo
Now do a clean install of EPE.

Are you PC or Mac?

Note that to get rid of the old "Favorites" you should follow the instructions in
How Do I Delete Or Edit A Favorite On A Nuvi 2200, 2300, 2400, 2405, 2407, 2505, 2507, 2707, 3400, 3500, 3507, 3700, LIVE Series {G}

For a while, I thought you were trying to make the changes with EPE to current.gpx on the 250 itself. I was, at first, convinced that such would not work because "current.gpx" is described in the GarminDevice.xml file as "output only". I found however that EPE is able to make certain limited changes to "current.gpx" SO LONG AS IT IS SAVED BACK TO THE DEVICE BY EPE.

However, your post above says that you are making changes to a copy of "current.gpx" that is on the hard drive and then copying that file back to the 250. THIS WILL NOT WORK.

Now, what you can do is to change the name of the hard drive "current.gpx" file to ANYTHING else (Garmin suggests current1.gpx) before copying it back to the 250.

I am still confused about the "paste" problem. All I can think of now is the you have some Favorite is current.gpx that you wanted to change with EPE. You went to another place and got the correct information, pasted it into EPE, saved the file back to the hard drive, copied current.gpx back to the 250 (overwriting the old file), fired up the 250 and the change was not present and you are interpreting this as a "paste" not having worked.

uhm

Tool to Debug Paste Problem

It might be caused by an application with a lock on the Windows Clipboard. This utility should determine the Process that's causing the problem:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/temp/GetOpenClipboardWindow.zip

Unzip and run the tool during the time you encounter the problem. Post back what it reports.

Google reports many copy/paste issues with a variety of causes - antivirus, Internet Explorer,Skype, memory management utilities...

If you'd like more technical details, here is a discussion where a user reported symptoms matching your situation:
Copy + Paste (Clipboard) Issues / Not Working? - TechNet

and here is more on the GetOpenClipboardWindow program which could be used to help debug your problem further.

Paste function not working with Extra POI Editor

Thanks to everyone offering suggestions. Here's an update.

• I uninstalled EPE with Revo Uninstaller, rebooted, and started EPE. I was able to paste. But not for long. When the paste function worked, the only other open programs were Notepad and MS Outlook. After I opened MS Word, however, the paste function stopped working in EPE.

• Since I'm the only one having this problem with EPE, it sounds almost certainly like an MS or a Windows issue. I'll study the very helpful links provided here, and will try those avenues.

Thanks again!! What a helpful group this is!

"Paste" problem solved!

Figured out what was preventing me from pasting text into the fields in Extra POI Editor's POI Edit window: my antivirus program set itself up to prevent pasting in certain programs.

I found the solution in the TechNet link that WAASup kindly posted. I'm copying the solution below, for the benefit of anyone else who gets to this thread while seeking a solution to a similar "paste problem."

My deepest thanks to all of you who helped me. This solved the problem in at least one other app, too.

====[Solution appears below]====
I had the same problem with Webroot SecureAnywhere, but the support people there helped me figure out how to fix it. Open Webroot and in the right hand column there will be an entry for "Identity Protection." To the right of that is an gear wheel icon. Click (left click) on that icon, and in the window which opens, click the Application Protection tab. In that tab you will probably see whatever browsers you are using, and they should be set to "protect."

But you may also see (as I did) the programs into which you are having problems pasting, set to "deny." If you know those programs are safe (and you wouldn't be using them if you didn't), then change the "deny" setting to "allow" and the problem will be fixed. Hope this helps. It was driving me completely batty until I read this thread, and tried disabling Webroot as you did, and found that was the problem. And then Webroot support helped me find this solution.

We appreciate your posting the solution to your problem. I would never have guessed this was a problem.

What would be the reason, I wonder, why this particular antivirus would think that EPE was a problem?

Thanks for posting your results

Good to hear that your problem is solved.
