Edit IMG File

Is it possible to edit the Garmin IMG file on the GPS? I want to delete areas that I do not drive in and make room for a secondary map.

I could reinstall the maps and request certain regions only at install time as a last resort workaround, but I want to edit the IMG file myself.

Thanks!

AFAIK

AFAIK Garmin's IMG maps can not be altered but wouldn't be a lot easier just to use and SD card in your GPS (assuming it has a slot) to put your maps on?

I thought that the Map Install software (http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3291 ) lets you build a new map (img file). At least it used to be that way. I haven't done it for a while now but it used to be possible and quite simple. Highlight all areas of your interest and build a new img file. Make sure that you backup your old map because the new map will be send to your connected device as gmapprom.img and it will replace the old gmapprom.img file.

no and yes

First part. No it is impossible to edit map file on GPS. It can be only read. No changes are allowed.

Second part. Yes, you can select only parts of map to be installed. If you install them to computer and then use Map Install or MapSource (not sure about BaseCamp). Garmin big maps are made from smaller pieces. In those programs you can select which piece should be installed to GPS. But regions are made by Garmin and you can only select them but you can't change their size or shape.

Thanks

Thanks grzesja, that's exactly correct but if all the OP wants is a smaller region than what got put on his GPS then MapInstall would certainly do that. smile:
