Bought "new" 1450LMT but no map updates

Guys, not sure if there's anything I can do, but I bought a "new" 1450LMT on eBay and it appears the device had been turned on contrary to the claims of the seller. I can see an address saved to Recents. So, I gather that started the 90 day clock ticking for map updates. I registered the device at mygarmin.com and it tells me I can purchase updated maps for $90 or $110.

I bought this unit since I already own one and like it a lot since it has the routing function. I guess I can return it to the seller but am not keen on doing that.

Any clever suggestions on this? Thanks.

Maps installed are 2012.20

LMT

If this is an LMT it should have lifetime free maps.

true, but

True, but it has exceeded Garmin's 2 year inactivity limit. Garmin's policy is that a device must be updated at least once every two years to retain the lifetime map subscription

If you use Garmin Express, it will not tell you if it is a LMT, but myGarmin will. Plug your GPS into your computer, go to myGarmin and login. The model number will show.

Hope this helps. BTW Garmin voice help is better than email IMHO anyway.

Yeah,

it's definitely LMT. There's even a little slip of paper that says you need to go to a specific URL to activate the lifetime updates. That URL does not exist today.

I've got a complete backup from my other 1450LMT that was taken when it was brand new. Is there a file I could grab off that to get the LMT cycle restarted?

I'll check in with Garmin. I would think they could see that the device has never had a map update performed.

Worst case: How/where can I buy lifetime updates for something less than $109? Don't they have periodic offerings?

Thanks again.

Geez,

this gets stranger by the moment. I had an email from Garmin this morning telling me the unit I registered is a 1440 !!

"Thank you for registering your nüvi® 1440 at Garmin.com. By registering with us, you'll have access to the most recent information about your device."

I had to look up the 1440. Never heard of it. Device definitely shows "1450" on the label.

There's something odd about this unit.

When I use mygarmin/manage maps, the unit shows this info:

Installed Maps:

MPC Map

There's no option to update the maps for USA/Can. There is an option to update European maps.

When I view map info on the device, it only shows that CN for USA/Can is installed. Nothing else.

When connected to BaseCamp, everything seems normal for the USA in terms of routing and detail. BaseCamp shows only CN N America being installed.

When viewing W Europe in Basecamp, there's no detail there. You would not be able to navigate.

that the seller lied.

Report the seller to E-Bay and ask for your money to be returned. The European maps were deleted and a North American Map installed with the hope the buyer would be dumb enough to not understand the switch.

If my limited knowledge of Garmin's model numbering is correct, your unit is identical to the unit you thought you were buying, except it was produced for the European market so it carries a different model number based on the S/N.

CamelCamelCamel

The 1440 was a European model so the Lifetime maps are for Europe. Someone probably re-labeled the one you have.

They usually do have discounts on the lifetime maps (usually around the holidays.) I picked mine up for under $50 over 2 years ago.

If you go to the site Camelcamelcamel

There you can set a price to watch, then it will email you when it get at or below the price you set.

Yeah, I'm sensing another case of half-truths and mis-representation.

What's odd is that the unit has a 1450 sticker on it and it doesn't physically look like the 1440 shown on Garmin's site. The unit I have has the chrome bezel, the unit on Garmin's site doesn't.

Yes, the unit serial number doesn't look like my 1450's serial number.

I'll look at that - thanks.

I thought I read that I can't buy lifetime updates for a different region. In my case, it looks like I can get lifetime for Europe, but not elsewhere.

Upon closer inspection

I see the S/N on the label on the box does not match the device.

My other 1450 box is different compared to the box the 1440 was sent in. This box is kind of plain in comparison, blue and white, simple design. Does not list a model number on the package.

Would Garmin refurb a 1440, change the bezel to chrome and slap a 1450 label on it after instlling CN NAmerica maps?

Since you have determined the device and box don't match, what color was the box? If it was a white box, then it's a refurb. If it's a standard colored box, it's for a new unit. It's entirely possible that someone switched the guts of a 1450 with a 1440 as well. The internal electronic serial should match one of the labels.

In any event. Complain to E-Bay and stop payment if possible. The seller could even be charged with fraud if you want to take it that far.

From my experiences, it is even possible you have a stolen unit as Garmin isn't forthcoming about releasing information about stolen units or preventing them from being re-registered.

My mistake on the

serial number. I must have been looking at the unit ID.

The device, device label and box label all show the same S/N. So, that's OK. What's still strange is when at mygarmin some screens show the device as a 1440, other screens say it's a 1450LMT.

I think I'll call Garmin and see if they can offer any guidance.

Yes, the box is kind of a generic thing, blue and white, no print mentioning a specific model.

GOOD NEWS!

I luv it when things are resolved in my favor smile

I telephoned Garmin and they accepted full responsibility and asked no questions.

What I suggested above about this being a 1440 in a refurb'ed 1450 case was the issue. The problem is, when Garmin did the refurb'ing, someone didn't purge the unit's original Europe S/N and that was causing the issue...Garmin's system was seeing two different S/Ns against the Unit ID number. All cleaned up courtesy of Garmin USA !!!

My thoughts

I just read your latest post which makes my first thoughts irrelevant so I've deleted all my earlier suggestions that would have appeared here.

Good work, by the way.

Remember that you can improve the display of Junction Views by manually downloading and installing the large JCV file. If done, this large JCV installation will need to be done each time you update the map.

Craig,

thanks for your comments.

I do know about the large JCV file and have been using that on my other 1450. I believe I've got to get another micro SD so there's adequate space for everything.

Out of curiosity, will I be able to download map updates just once and apply to both of the 1450 units or will I have to download twice ?

I typically tell the GE program to save to both device and computer, but I guess I don't know how to access the map saved to the computer and apply it to the device later on.

thanks again to all !

Garmin policy

when someone purchase a gps on ebay and if the gps was already register Garmin stated that the life time update only go with original owner, and can not be transfer. if the gps was register ones can 't not be register again.Unless the original owner will give you his Garmin account name and password(good luck with that).and do not think you are the only one who as been having that problem.Purchase a Gps on Ebay it may sound like a good deal.but at the end is WYSIWYG..

Driver,

I agree with and understand what you are saying. I've learned the hard way before. I asked the seller a lot of questions prior to purchase including "has the device ever been turned on?"

Driver 38, your statements used to be correct but were changed a couple or more years ago as long as the lifetime maps came with the nuvi (LMT or LM). You remain correct if lifetime map updates were purchased separately for a non-LM/LMT device. This has made buying a used LM or LMT model better since the lifetime updates will come with the used nuvi:

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={faefc030-14c6-11de-76c5-000000000000}

Because map updates (including the nuMaps Lifetime subscription) do not require registration, they may still be accessed if the device is sold or given away as long as the device has not been registered. If the device has been registered to a myGarmin account and lifetime updates were purchased separately, removing the device from the account will also remove the lifetime subscription.

Lifetime updates can be accessed outside of myGarmin by connecting the device to a computer and downloading and installing Garmin Express.

Also, a previously registered nuvi can be re-registered to a new owner if the original owner deregisters the device.

If I'm incorrect in anything above, please post a reference from a Garmin Support faq or forum reference to show me that the policy has changed yet again.

PS--do you mean caveat emptor rather than WYSIWYG? smile

I bought my 2595lmt from ebay. Looks as new and was refurbished, and a new warranty, by Garmin. This really should be reported to ebay just to straighten the seller out. It's an inconvenience and a bother, but checking the sellers feedback should be looked at 1st step. You should at the very least give a bad feedback.
Glad you got it fixed.

Skoville,

this seller has 100% feedback with many sales. I knew from the outset that they were not an authorized re-seller. I was in contact with them and they would have made things right if Garmin didn't help.

Apart from the aggravation and spike in my blood presssure, I got a smokin' deal on this unit and it appears absolutely new. I'm very pleased with the way this turned out. But it does serve as a good reminder to use caution when purchasing a device like this from an unknown source.
