Too little changes for too much work

If there are only a few minor changes in the maps, it's not worth the time and effort to update too often. Consider also the risk of something going wrong (it has in the past) and you start wishing the updates will be substantial but less frequent.

Two Years

I skip some of the updates as they are not always worth the effort. It is important to remember that Garmin's lifetime map updates that now come with many devices will expire if you don't do an update at least once within 2 years.

From Garmin's website: "A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more."

Thanks for the info!

That is a good bit of info to know. I have an old 755 that I don't use anymore but I had added lifetime maps to it before I purchased a new GPS. Will have to make a point of updating it at least once a year.

2015.10

It hasn't even been uploaded to the servers yet, so I say we definitely won't see it till mid May, which is consistent with the last two years.

Predicted Date

If last years schedule is being followed then sometime around June 11th should be the release date. Otherwise sometime around the second week in May.

Last year there appeared to have been a delay due to reported issues with the maps. Over at http://forums.gpsreview.net/discussion/17527/when-is-the-nex... they list the release history since 2009 and they are predicting May 28, 2014 for 2015.10.

Slow Down

I kind of wish they'd slow down the release of these updates. Here we are, talking about the first 2015 release and it's only April of 2014.

And

And I'm looking at buying a 2015 Subaru Forester which has been available for a few weeks now. It only comes out once a year and hasn't changed hardly at all from the 2014 model. smile

I personally think map updates twice a year would be adequate.

No one is forcing us to download all the updates as they come out. I only update every-other-one. Some times not even that. But at least once a year.

They have not yet made street name corrections I sent in during the summer of 2013.

As far as I'm concerned, map data doesn't get updated fast enough.

Is this true?

With lifetime map updates

With lifetime map updates and traffic, does it even make sense to buy new(er) GPSs?

I have a Garmin 2597 and TomTom 540 both of which have the lifetime maps/traffic. They are both 5" screens. TomTom has built-in safety camera alerts. Garmin has voice-activation and blue tooth.

Other than that, I can't distinguish between the two meaningfully since neither has capacitive screen with pinch to zoom or HD, though I'm not sure about the benefits of either.

Hopefully

Hopefully they get those issues fixed first. I know the current map for the dezl series is horrible and chock full of errors.

Guess we will see. It seems crazy getting 2015 when it is still 2014, but the 2014 came out during 2013. At least there are some type of updates, although some may not affect me at all. It's still good to know someone is trying

Round Tuit

Is a "round tuit" that sticky disk that lets you mount the Garmin on the dash instead of the windshield? You put it on the dash and it sticks tuit.

I agree, but the cost of compiling all the data in the maps is just humongous. It's just not the streets that are behind, just ride by any large shopping center that you are familiar with and you'll see that the icons for the stores are lacking big time.

There are side roads near me that are at least 5 years old that go into a "Business Park" and they are not on my Garmin, but they are on Google Maps.

I think that as more and more businesses send their info to Google and others, we may wind up with a map file and a separate file for built in POIs.

I must admit that the street address locations are improving - at least on the major roads.

Map updates

I don't usually download new maps when released. I like to download maps before I have a road trip. That way the maps are no more than three months old.
