Nuvi 2597 Won't remember map icons

Does anybody know or is having the same problem I'm having with my Nuvi 2597? The unit doesn't seem to remember the icon I choose to display in the map when saving a location. For example, I may choose a "house" icon when saving an address but when I re-start the unit it reverts back to a "heart" icon!
Is this happening to anybody else or other units?
Thanks.

@edserrano

It would be very helpful if you would walk through what you did in choosing the icon "when saving a location".

Excruciating detail please.

Then I will repeat it on my 2595 and see what happens to me.

John

I have had that randomly

I have had that randomly happen on my 50LM, usually with the pushpin icon.

I just gave up and selected another icon and don't use the pushpin anymore.

Too much trouble to track down the reason or if anyone else has the problem.

I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

Same problem on 3490

Yup happens on Nuvi 3490 as well. Can't use the Basecamp icons either, it just keeps showing that heart icon for everything. I've given up on it, not that big a deal to keep wasting time over in my opinion.

You are right, not a big deal. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't doing something wrong which I sort of new but wasn't 100%.
Thanks everybody for your responses. Hopefully Garmin will correct it in a future firmware revision.

I have the 2597. The icons only revert back to the heart when I do a reset. I wish it was a flag or something else.

Icons

Hello John, Thanks for responding.
The default icon for any saved place is a "heart" and the only way to change it is to go to "Edit" and press "Change Map Symbol" and then choose a symbol (icon) of your choosing.
The problem is; when I shut down the unit and then turn it on again, the symbols (icons) revert back to the default "heart" icon.

Have to "Go"

Once you do the above then hit "Go" and let it calculate the route. Now, turn the unit off. Then turn the unit back on and go to that saved plcce. Touch the "i" and see if the chosen symbol is there.

This works on my 2595.

Icons

Will try it and let you know how it went, thanks.

Icons

It worked.
Thanks for the tip.

Icons

It worked for a while. Now the default "heart" is back!!!
Not a huge deal but it bothers me, wish Garmin would fix this!

What changes have you made, if any?

Have you done anything with current.gpx or added .gpx files or anything of the like?

Icons

I have added routes created in BaseCamp and Poi files with POI Loader.

The reason I asked was that I am trying to determine exactly how our units keep track of those locations we choose to have a different "symbol". On my 2595, I have determined that there is a change made to the data for that "waypoint" (<wpt ...>) in the current.gpx file. A line that looks like
<ele>-0.11</ele>
was added for all those locations I selected an symbol other than the "heart" default.

I am not sure why the "GO" requirement is there, but to save the changes across power cycles requires current.gpx to be written from internal memory (which is where the pointers to the actual symbols chosen must be saved). I had hoped that current.gpx would give us data about the, say, "part number" of the symbols but that did not turn out to be the case.

I have sent data from Mapsource to my unit when working on mgardledge's Budapest problem and symbols I choose months ago are still intact; I have used POI Loader a lot in trying to get to the bottom of what determines how far away from out "location" (actual or simulated) a POI will show up; I continue to explore what might be going on with symbols.

Thanks for all your help and if you find out anything else, please keep us posted.
Thanks,
Eddie S.

Update on the "Icons" issue. It works now, the icons are not reverting back to the "heart" default icon.
The problem was an IBTK (Idiot behind the keyboard) issue.
I was not shutting off the unit completely, I was merely putting it in standby. Once I shut the unit off completely, the icons stayed.
Thanks everybody for all your help.

Appreciation

I appreciate that follow up from you. Evidently standby does not act as a trigger but off - on will.

What have you recently done?

Icons

Sorry I didn't see your reply before.
Didn't realize at what point I lost the icons again since I was sure it was working properly and it did for a while.
I was just using the GPS normally and the only thing I can remember doing was updating my POI's and importing routes from BaseCamp.

what it looks like

is any changes you may have made to the displayed icons is lost whenever there is an update that changes the contents. It appears you will need to repeat the steps of changing those icons after every update/change.

If that's the case, I guess I'm going to have to learn to live with the hearts!!!

How are you creating the icon?

The icon is a feature I haven't used before, maybe I'm not doing it the same way as you. I searched for restaurants, found one, saved it, went to the 'saved' places location, edited the restaurant and changed the icon. I have stopped and restarted the 2597 several times now and the icon change is still there. How long before yours reverted to the heart? Did you create yours a different way?
