MapQuest

So I just realized that MapQuest is *no longer* using data from HERE (Navteq). If you look at the bottom, it now says "Portions copyright TomTom". The map looks dramatically different in my area now as well. I just wanted to let everyone know. On the plus side, theoretically you can see what data TomTom has...they use TeleAtlas right? I don't think you could go anywhere on the web to see the map data previously for them, right?

Also - for the record - overall the map data is now MUCH worse in my area than compared to HERE's data. This confirms to me that I will not use a TomTom.

Nooooo

It's the only one I can get to send to GPS. The others send the route to "car", "email", but Never to the GPS. I never have found the "Send to GPS" in Google maps.

I used it a fair amount of times. Now I have to use mapquest.

It was working until a few

It was working until a few weeks ago. They deleted it on the "classic maps" when the "new Google maps" began being pushed.

OK

I like MapQuest but it shows one route on the map then loads a different one in the GPS. I liked the route it showed missing a spaghetti bowl but when I checked the GPS the route went through the bowl just like the Garmin route.

You don't get the Mapquest route. You get the start and end point and the GPS calculates its route.

Got ya

Then why use it?

Maybe

Maybe because for 99.9% of the routes someone creates in Mapquest, the Nuvi will come up with exactly the same route.

For Garmin models that support multipoint routing (Custom Routes or Trip Planner), Mapquest works quite well for transferring routes. If you aren't familiar with the process, you might want to review this post I wrote some time ago.

Note that the more shaping points you create in Mapquest, the more likely your nuvi will calculate the same route you created in Mapquest.

Thanks alandb ! I should have looked harder. This is great. Nice guide.

The vast majority of people transferring routes from Mapquest have only the starting and ending points. What makes your procedure work is in step 3 where you add shaping or via points.

Very true Box Car.

Using Mapquest to transfer a route to a nuvi is pretty much the same process as using any other computer routing program, including Microsoft S&T, Delorme Street Atlas USA or even Garmin's own Basecamp and Mapsource. You need to add sufficient intermediate via or shaping points to force the nuvi to calculate the route you want. The mistake most people make in Mapquest is to pick one of the "alternate" routes offered and put no shaping points on it, expecting the nuvi to somehow know which Mapquest route they picked. Mapquest only sends and the nuvi only receives the individual points that were explicitly set.
