map installs

Hi new to forum , hope someone can help.I have a nuvi 1350 which I have owned for a couple of years. I have a 4 GB sd card installed. I asked for a new map through the Garmin Express desktop app.A new map was downloaded but was not instlled on the GPS. Reason not enough room. I installed a blank, formatted 8GB SD card and the new map was loaded on the unit. Now to my question -Why was more room needed? Why when finished ,searching on windows explorer, it shows device-Garmin nuvi with properties[used space: 211 MB-free space:1.56 GB

Removable Disc [my 8GB SD card] Garmin Folder >gmappupdate.gsd size 0 KB
Map Folder >gmapupdate.gma size 3KB
>gmapupdate Disc Image File 1,972,288 KB [1.88Gig showing on this card after map update.
>gmapupdate.unl size 1 KB

It appears that my map is installed on the SD card.Is this normal? I was not asked where to install the map, I was only told that there was not enough room to do the new install.
Thanks for any help.

Normal

Yes, this is normal. Garmin Express recognized that you had insufficient room on the internal storage and installed the map on the SD card. I suspect that you may have missed the message in Express that said it was going to install on SD.

From the size of the file, it looks like you have the lower 49 version (does not include Canada or Alaska). Some of the 1300 models had the full NA map including Canada and Mexico, others had only the lower 49. I suspect your's is the latter.

You should check the nuvi to make sure map detail is showing up correctly. Also go to Tools>Map>Map info and it will show which map version is installed.

map on SD card

When Updating or just installing new map most of the time will ask you where you want to install the map.and you will get a warning from garmin web side that your internal gps does not have not enough space,Some people they may not get the full map install it but only partial, and I do not think you want to do that.unless you delete like GPX files or VOICE files of different language a lot of people they eliminate and delete those language they are not need it.The average size of new map is close now to 2gb and some are even much bigger Plus you may want to install too the JCV file that it go with the new map and most are 750MB average .If garmin would had install the new map on your internal Gps drive would be be going mad right now cause your Gps will not be working anymore.

I only wish that Garmin instead having internal regular 2GB they would install like 4 or even 8 *GB instead.Even if it will cost a little more.it would make customer much happy.knowing that do not need to worry about the internal space.

Map On SD Card

I forgot to add that I also had a city map [Vancouver on the GPS. I hope I can transfer that to my PC as I don't need it all the time. I'm still a little confused why it would not have worked with the 4GB card installed . I have updated this unit a few times and this is the first time I've had the issue come up that there was not enough room.
Does the amount of saved addresses and or POI take up a lot of room?

Not it all

Remember you have an 8GB SD card you can add as much stuff as you want,POI and favorite they do not take too much room it all.If I remember correctly you still got over 230 mb left you have long way to go before that card get full. Install what ever you want and always keep an eyes how much MB is left on the card.
I know you still wonder why GE did not install the map on your GPS connect your Gps on your pc and look how much space is left, and if under the GPS drive you see a RED LINE instead of a Blue line that's even worst.

The size of the full 2014.40 CN NA map is 2,204,032 KB (2.10 GB), so I suspect you have something less than the full NA map. If you look at the Map Info as suggested above it should tell you what regions you have installed.

Since brunol reported the installation to be all of the USA and Canada, could the smaller file size be NA minus Mexico?

Possibly.

I don't know how much space Mexico takes. Brunoi's map is about 225 MB short of the full NA, so it seems reasonable that would be about the right amount for Mexico

Selecting all Mexico (2014.40) in MapSouce, the map size is 216.4MB, in agreement with the ~225MB noted.

Why a seperate map for Vancouver?

The complete NA2014.4 covers all of Canada, the USA and Mexico in full detail, cities, towns and all.
Why an extra map?
