2014.40 Map details

Up till now I have not seen Alleys.
I normally park in garage on the alley, behind the house. It is not labeled, but it's there....

I noticed the alley is now on map.... I never noticed it before. Prior to this map it would look like I turned off road.

Interesting

I'll have to check this out soon. No alleys in my town but we might be someplace soon that does.

What part of the world are

What part of the world are you in? I live in an area outside of Philadelphia, PA that has had alleys since the 1940's, none on the map here though.

. 2 Garmin DriveSmart 61 LMT-S, Nuvi 2689, 2 Nuvi 2460, Zumo 550, Zumo 450, Uniden R3 radar detector with GPS built in, includes RLC info. Uconnect 430N Garmin based, built into my Jeep. .

Maybe Map type related

Confirmed it again Last Friday....
This is the first time that I've used an map other than complete NA, but did so because of 2Gb Limit.

I loaded USA & Canada, and it's about same size as NA used to be.....

Maybe alley's are a function of that... As it's the first "Less Than" Complete NA maps I've ever used...

Alleys

My Garmin suggested I take an alley this past weekend. Not being too familiar with the area, I stuck to the street. First time I remember it sending me down an alley.

I'll have to check the update to see if alleys are present for me as well. Sometimes alleys aren't necessarily wide enough for both directions throughout, especially with a lot of larger vehicles on the road now a days. This makes me very hesitant to take an unfamiliar alley.

By my house there are 4x4 trails up Ponders Mountain & Pine Mountain and they are not public roads by any means and those trails have been on the last couple updates.

Not an improvement

While 2014.30 seemed to have improved the routing over previous releases, this one goes back to it's old trick trying to send me in the middle of the city instead of the direct freeway to my destination. I saved at least 30 minutes by not following its directions.

I noticed it too

I have a custom route and after the update, it automatically reroute me at certain juncture, where the 2014.30 never does.

Gertie told me the entrance to a shopping center was an alley. They may be using alley for unnamed roads.

Long ago I removed all the unnecessary files from my 660 to maximize free space. Even with that, Map Updater told me this time that I could only fit the lower 49.

Are you still loading to an SD card? That might be the difference. I went back to loading maps onto the main unit because the GPS start-up time was so much slower reading from the SD card. Of course, with only the lower 49 installed, the 660 boots up really fast now.

Tampa, FL - Garmin nüvi 660 (Software Ver 4.90), 2021.20 CN NA NT maps | Magellan Meridian Gold

I just updated to the NA

I just updated to the NA 2014.4 on my Nuvi 760. As you mention, there is not enough memory for the full map. I was not given a choice of lower 49 only. I could get East or West, which included parts of Canada and Mexico. Or lower US, which included Mexico, but not northern states. There were several other combinations of NE, SW, etc. But everything wanted to include some portion of Canada or Mexico. As I don't plan to travel outside the US borders, having only the lower 48 would be a perfect option for me, but that was not presented as a choice, so I was forced to a SD card. Which was here my music normally resides. I'm sorry to hear this will slow down the boot up time of the Nuvi. Is there a way to load only the contiguous 48 states?

Routing

I have noticed this as well. It sometimes sends me off the highway and into the city. You would think Garmin would have fixed this by now.

You can always download the full CN 2014.40 mapset to your computer and then, using Garmin's MapInstall software, select the contiguous 48 states. This will create the mapset your looking for.

Now whether you can run this from your Nuvi or it needs to be on your SD card will depend on how much space you can squeeze out of the Nuvi's internal storage. My guess is, your stuck with the SD card however as just eliminating Canada (never a good idea grin ) and Mexico may not be enough of a size difference considering most of the road and POI data in City Navigator is for the US.
