MapUpdater V3.3.3 Now Works with CN NA 2014.40 Download

I thought I'd start a new thread for those that are still having issues with both MapUpdater and Garmin Express not working poperly for the 2014.40 map download. I prefer using MapUpdater and WebUpdater.

After numerous attempts in failed downloads of 2014.40 using MapUpdater V3.2.2 I downloaded the just released V3.3.3 and am happy to report the ability to download 2014.40 is now working.
I downloaded successfully using an XP Pro Sp3 Operating system.

You can Download V 3.3.3 here:
http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.exe

I'd just like to mention I find a big advantage when using MapUpdater as opposed to Express when downloading to Computer.
Garmin Updater gives the option to "Leave installation files on my computer", where Express does not. These files left on computer include the JCV file, ASR files, and other relevant files for your particular model

Another advantage I find using MapUpdater is you can select what portion of the map you want to download.
With Express, if you Nuvi device has enough room in internal memory the only option you have is installing the full map.

Here are some pics of MapUpdater 3.3.3 at work.

I HOPE THAT

Garmin keep it on line. I downloaded the 3.3.3 and will wait until I get back from vacation to download map just in case there is a problem.

I successfully downloaded Map Update 2014.40 and installed it on my Garmin GPS without a problem using MapUpdater v3.3.3 on a Windows 7 computer. Worked like a charm...

Garmin Express does give the option to leave the files on the computer.
Under Advanced Options you have the choice of Device only, Device & Computer, and Computer only.

Yes, but given how flaky Garmin Express can be, would you trust it?

Just used the new Map Updater to download to the computer. It took 35-40 minutes in total. Checked Map Source, and 2014.40 loaded.

Hopefully, they'll let us enthusiasts keep it, and save GE for those that choose to use it. Choices are good.

Great news

My computers:

GE: Gone!

GMU 3.3.3: saved for use in three months!

GE

I'll keep GE in 'hibernation' because of what some have stated regarding a re-install.

The tray app is set not to run at startup, and the Core Updater has been disabled in Services.

And what is the problem there??

one thing i do like about GE is it shows you how much available space is left on your unit.

Some folks have said they have had re-install problems after deleting due to residual files and registry entries. Rather than hunt down all of the junk, I'll just disable GE.

As for the space available, a simple right click in My Computer does the same thing and I don't have to run GE to see it.

Glad I Waited

I have been busy this week and did not see news of the 2014.40 release until this evening. Noticed the problems reported with Map Updater and then saw this thread. I have a 765T so I guess I would have had trouble.

My apologies, I should have made my statement clearer.

True, GE does have the option to leave the files on the computer, but they are only THE MAP FILES, not JCV, ARS, or any other required files that were Map related updates on the Nuvi.
This saves time when backing up, rather then using the files of the Nuvi to back up, use the files on the hard drive Map Installer left.

Thanks!

Thanks for the information and download link muell9k for Map Updater V3.3.3.

I hoped that if I waited long enough, the Map Updater issue could be resolved and I could avoid installing GE.

I did not know Garmin had released a new version of MapUpdater. Looking at the file properties - Digital Signature, it was just signed on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014. That tells me that Garmin is still updating this program. For a while anyway, it looks like they will continue to offer both MU & GE. When the recent problem posts started, I began wondering if Garmin had stopped supporting MU in favor of GE. Looks like that is not the case.

I've downloaded V3.3.3 and will try it in a couple of days to see If I can update my aging 660. smile

I will be trying it from both WinXP and Win7 when I do.

Correct, but when you actually run it, look in the upper-left corner of the window next to the name in the title bar. There it says V3.3.3.

I just looks like they didn't change the version number in the properties.

If you look at properties in Version 3.22 it also shows the version as 3.0.0.0. The only way I know of is run the program and look at the title bar in the upper left hand corner as the pic below displays.

If you have saved a previous version of MapUpdater on your PC

If you have saved a previous version of MapUpdater on your PC you should delete it before downloading v3.3.3. Each [previous or different] version of GarminMapUpdater.exe looks the same, but they are different. Just delete any old GarminMapUpdater.exe you may have on your PC and replace it with the latest v3.3.3 version.

By the way, for those of you who are still a little leery about downloading 2014.40 and installing it on your Garmin device - don't be 'if' you use MapUpdater v3.3.3. This MapUpdater works perfectly, just like all the previous versions of MapUpdater. Just do NOT use Garmin Express (GE) and expect it to work!

Good advice koot.

I actually keep the old versions of MapUpdater, because you never know when Garmin will change something in their map update that makes the current version unusable. Sometimes an old version will still work (although unfortunately that didn't hold true this time).

What I do is rename the file after I download it so I can tell what version it is. In this case I have the new file renamed as GarminMapUpdater_v3.3.3.exe. The file still runs fine after renaming.

Saving Mapupdater

Instead of deleting the older version of mapudater why not just rename the older version with its version number? Then you could download the newer version.

EDIT: Oooops, alandb beat me to a similar solution as I was typing this one. Sorry!

I prefer MapUpdater!

Thanks to muell9k, alanb, et al. for the good news about MapUpdater V3.3.3 and the info about various solutions for preserving older versions of files. Thanks also to t923347 for the link to the large JCV full-screen file.

I have downloaded V3.3.3 and will soon be updating my maps and JCV file.

GE

When MapUpdater did not work I updated maps, voices, firmware and any other files it wanted on 5 GPSs using the latest GE v2.5.2.0 with no problems. Saved the maps to the PC and when done I had to copy the large JCV file over from one unit to another and I relocate it on all the others to the SD card with the maps. I like to leave lots of memory on the base unit just incase the unit wants to use it.

I really don't worry about it too much as I have more than 1 backup of each GPS. One thing I will say about GE, change your power settings before starting because if the PC does shutdown with short power settings it will screw with GE and not complete.

I second koot's opinion. I just installed the new map with Map Updater v3.3.3 and things went flawlessly. Not quickly, mind you, but flawlessly. Before someone here found the new Map Updater I dreaded using Garmin Express. I had a bad experience with it when it first came out and I resent programs that won't go away when I'm done running them and then can't be uninstalled without me jumping through hoops.
Tomorrow I'll test the new maps, but I'm not expecting anything untoward.

Thanks to muell9k for the info and link. It worked like a charm. Now I do not have to install GE, at least till the next map release.

Happy

Cool. I really didn't want to install GE so I've been procrastinating about putting on the new maps. I'll get the new version of map updater and use that instead.

Many thanks for the heads up.

,

Using Garmin Express, seems to be working fine!

Worked fine on my Windows 7 64bit laptop

Used GE to update the 3790 and desktop maps and then used the new version of MapUpdater to update the laptops map version and both worked fine.

GE did mess up my units voices and erased all but one obscure language that I discovered when I tested the unit. Had to restore the voices I use.

MapUpdater v3.3.4

There are a couple of things to be aware of for folks who are having troubles with Garmin Express and when looking for an alternative come across this thread about MapUpdater.

As of yesterday MapUpdater still works fine with the lifetime maps on my Nuvi 765T.

The link at the top of this discussion now gets you MapUpdater v3.3.4.

Keeping older versions doesn't do much good any more. All of them will automatically update to the latest version now. I have four different versions ranging from 2.05 to 2.7.10. No matter which one I run, it will automatically download and run the latest. So you might as well just download the latest from the link at the top of this thread and use it.
