Installing 2014.40

Downloading now, to my 2597. Using Garmin Express, why is it downloading two versions? "Full Coverage of North America" and "nuMaps Lifetime North America". Maybe because the unit is less than 90 days and is getting the allowed Freebie and the Lifetime at the same time?

Yep

I'm downloading 2014.40 right now.

And it's big, 2955 MB

I tried the download using MapUpdater and it no longer works on my PC, it was still working with Ver 2014.30. I had to install Garmin Express. I too had 2 downloads showing. I closed out the "Full Coverage of North America" because I was receiving an error message. Currently downloading using "Lifetime North America" to "COMPUTER ONLY" since I don't trust Express. I'm still showing 15 minutes left on the downlaod at 1.4MB/S.

It may be only my PC not able to use MapUpdater, curious to hear from others if it works for them.

Difference

nuMaps Lifetime North America goes to the computer for BaseCamp to use. Full Coverage North America, (or Lower 49 or whatever variant you chose), goes to the GPS.

Yes, there is the Advanced Option now to download to the Unit and The computer in GE. It actually seems to be behaving fairly well. Right now and for the download of both maps, (I stopped one and restarted), I've have full pipe with 1.16mbs downloading. 10gb DSL. It's early. Not many have figured out it's available yet.

Please try again. If you continue to experience problems contact customer support. I have the GPS plugged directly into a usb port...im using Garmin express. There were two updates listed and it installed the nuMaps Lifetime with no problems...it was just the full coverage maps that wont install. Anyone else having this problem????

Garmin Express

Ge just did what MapUpdater and GE used to do. I am updating my second unit, and GE actually used the previously downloaded map to update the second unit. Cuts the download time by 90%. Since the second unit takes the Lower 49, it still had to download some additional info, but not like sitting there waiting on 5GB to download.

Downloading I hope

Tried Mapupdater it gave me an unexpected error. Tried again and it wanted a product code that wasn't on the Garmin site. 2014.4 was there but no info. Tried Garmin Express and it wanted my email address. It appears to be working now but is running slow. It must be their website. Garmin has been messing again.

Garmin Express (Installed OK)

2014.40 installed to GPS and computer in 50 minutes.

Just installed using Garmin Express. First tried with Garmin Map Updater but it gave an error.

This is the first time I could not load the full North America since I don't have a microsd card. No big deal, I just loaded US & Canada.

I'll probably get a microsd card sometime this year.

MapUpdater

muell9k wrote:

As I mentioned in another thread, I got the update using MapUpdater, but since I install manually there's no way to know whether MapUpdater would work for installing to the MicroSD.

Had a

Had a problem with MapUpdater as it said there was an server issue and couldn't continue. The last 2 updates reported that there was a map update to PURCHASE but I have Lifetime Maps. That can be fixed by getting the map product code from myGarmin.com.

Went to my backup plan which was using Garmin Express. Doing this in the past resulted in GE reporting that my 3597 did not have enough space for the full North American update. Much to my surprise, this time I got no such message and the update went without incident although I have no idea why it wants to download the update twice. The first download installs the maps on my Nuvi while the second installs it on my computer. MapUpdater may have done this when selecting install to device and computer but hid it from the user so it looked like one download. I have no idea about that but it appears that is't the same issue reported by phranc in the OP of this thread.

Update multiple computers

I have Basecamp installed on multiple computers. When I update my maps, I can update my GPS and one computer with one download but I've always done a "Computer Only" update on each of the others, requiring each to download the update again.

Is there a way to use the update downloaded on one computer to update another computer?

I've avoided GE like the plague, based on all the reports from POI Factory.

I will still avoid it, until I hear good reports from the experts on this site.

You need to figure out what the file downloaded for BaseCamp is. My observation that it is a different file for BaseCamp than is used to update the GPS, hence the dual downloads.

After moving, you have to figure out how to tell either GE or MapUdater to use this file instead of downloading new. Not sure how they register this.

Try it. I predict afterwards, you'll only be slightly peeved. The new GE really does work--and this statement comes from a previously-avowed GE hater/avoider.

In case others missed it, the answer to your original post is:

The first download is updating the maps on your Nuvi.

The second download is downloading the maps to be used by Basecamp or Mapsource on your computer.

This assumes you pick the option to install the update to both your GPS and to your computer.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

GE

Still not convinced that I want to install GE, but it sounds like Garmin has this release set-up so you have to use GE. Has everyone had errors when using MapUpdate?? I can wait on this map update as my next trip will be to Japan and am using OpenSource maps for that on my SD card.

Thanks

PS----Just saw the thread from CraigW, so I guess I will have to install GE. Garmin does it to us users again!!!

First time I have used Garmin Express

First time I have used Garmin Express and all went smooth installing the new 2014.40 maps to my 3790LMT and to the computer. Did the update to 5 unit updates to the GPS at the same time.

Installed GE and did the update to that software before I connected the 3790 and all went smooth and very quick. Map update shows up in BaseCamp and on the 3790.

Some problems

Try MapUpdater and would not work.As stated from another user it try to install new maps for me to purchase. Then try again and got error message.Held my nose and downloaded Garmin Express.Had one hang up with it and after clicking retry it picked right back up where it had stalled out at. Then loaded with no other problems.

No Problem

Like others, I've experienced a lot of issues regarding Garmin Express, but this time I tried hooking up my 2595LMT and under an hour it installed the map update to both my unit and pc. Hmmm...

Garmin Express

worked fine for both my 2797LMT and my 765T. Mapupdater wouldn't work for either unit. Installed to unit and PC. All went well!!!

I'm running low on space so i just installed the lower 49 NE.

MapUpdater ... sorry to see it go.

I am glad to hear that most of us are having success with Garmin Express for this map update. However, I still like the simplicity and reliability of MapUpdater. I wish Garmin would give us the choice of the install method instead of forcing Express down our throats. All good things come to an end, so I guess it is time to say goodbye to MapUpdater.

Used Garmin Express. Downloaded the map at work. When Garmin Express asked for the GPS, which I didn't have, I quit the program. After I got home, I connected the GPS and the map installed in 20 minutes.

Why not just use GE and then just uninstall it afterwards?

For programs like GE, I just install them when I need to use them, then after I confirm all went well I uninstall them.

That way there's no overhead when you're not using them -- if it's a program I know I'll use more then once in a blue moon, I don't both to wipe all the reg entries and setting files so that when re-installing it remembers me smile (Note: for some programs that doesn't work, but the last time I re-installed GE it remembered everything)

Also, in the past, the Maps themselves were always a separately installed item. For those that have installed the new map, could you have a look under your installed programs and see if there is an entry for both GE and the map update (should be something like "Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2014.4 Update") and let me know.

Update to Map updater

This post has an update to MapUpdater and they said it works.

Be sure and deleted your old MapUndater first as it will revert back if you don't, that is what mine did. I now have to delete it and reinstall the update.
I have not taken the time to update my map yet. Hope it does work.

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/42045

Just deleted the old Mapupdater link and installed the new one from the link in this post and I now have 3.3.3

--
Mary, Nuvi 2450, Garmin Viago, Honda Navigation, Nuvi 750 (gave to son)

MapUpdater 3.3.3 is good

This is correct, MapUpdater has been updated to version 3.3.3 and it worked fine for me the other night and I haven't heard it failing for anyone on the GPS Review Garmin board.

Seemed to run a bit slower than before, but for me that's a small price to pay if I can continue to avoid using Garmin Express. I always set mine up to download a new map overnight anyway, so speed isn't much of an issue, it's always ready by morning.
