Free space on my new 3597LMTHD.

My new 3597LMTHD has an 8GB storage volume with about 7GB usable. Out of the box new it had 1.82 GB free space with 5.19 GB in use. After I updated to the latest map and software and installed my custom POI's, the amount of free space went down to about 1.2 GB. I then went through and cleared out the unused voices, text, help, keyboards, vehicles, ASR languages, etc. I now have 1.55 GB free space. That should be enough to handle several map updates. But still, for a new model, the amount of free space is less than I expected.

My 1490

I eliminated all the files I did not need right away.
After a few updates I put the map on the 4GB card and my custom poi and large JCV files on the unit. I have 899mb free on the 1490 and 1.06gb free on the card.
I don't have a memory problem even with 21 days of trip log.

New Models (For 2014)

That is a good point. The 2014 Essential Line is shown, but the 2014 Nuvi Prestige and 2014 Nuvi Advanced are not listed yet. I wonder if those will be announced in conjunction with some sort of upcoming trade show. The 2014 Consumer Electronics Show has come and gone, but maybe they will just do a press release soon.

Maybe they will release a Garmin Nuvi 3592LM in the United States after all!

Thats what I'm saying and don't understand Garmin knows maps get bigger and bigger with each release why are they playing around with small storage? seems very odd.

They have to wait for us to beta test the Essential line for them first! Once we work out all the bugs for them, they will feel confident in releasing their higher-priced 'Prestige' units. grin

do you think Garmin completely got rid of 7" models, I see only 6".

Free Space on my 3760

I have about the exact same numbers on my 3760LMT

About the Same for my 3760

New Models (For 2014)

Well, here it is the middle of April and we have the 2014 Essential Line, but still no 2014 Advanced Line or 2014 Prestige Line yet. Does anybody happen to know if they are likely to announce something in conjunction with some sort of trade show or will they just surprise us someday?

I suppose it is possible that there will be no 2014 Advanced Line or 2014 Prestige Line yet, but I wouldn't think that would happen. Does anybody happen to know when the 2013 Advanced Line or 2013 Prestige Line was announced last year?

nuvi model history.

@jim1348 ... You can find the release dates on this FAQ: Garmin GPS Models | Release Date History. I don't have a reference for the model announcement dates. Often new models are announced months before they are actually available, especially on the higher end models.

New Models (For 2014)

Alandb,

Thank you for that information. Considering that the Garmin Nüvi Prestige Line 3597LMTHD shows 4/2013, that could very well mean that we will hear something about a 2014 Prestige Line model soon.

Numbering system

I'll never understand how Garmin decides to number their units. Almost seems like a hat-pull.

actually

they use the "sorting hat" from Hogwarts. (It's on loan.)

Illiterate? Write for free help.

Numbers are confusing, higher # not necessarily "loaded"

I've also found that the higher numbered units don't necessarily mean the most or best features. For example, I have a 2797LMT with a very large 6" screen, voice recognition, iPhone Smart Link app, etc. and I found the 3597 had only a 5" screen as well as a few other shortcomings.

No additional 2014 Nuvi's?

Well, aside from the "Essential line", it doesn't appear that Garmin plans on releasing any new Nuvi models for 2014. If they were, I would think we would have heard by now.

Has anyone heard differently?

Thanks.

I have to agree with the folks regarding the paltry memory

A product designed for the future would ensure that there are at least a few extra gigs of space, but I suppose that would increase costs slightly. More importantly, owners might delay upgrading later if they had sufficient memory on reserve, thereby destroying the old designed-obsolescence business model.

It does seem as if the Advanced and Prestige series have vanished for 2014. Maybe non-US Garmin sites will give some clues, but for now it isn't looking very promising.

I'm confused

Although I know the features change from series to series, the 3597 is the top of the line. Other than the screen size, what is another "shortcoming" the 3597 has compared to other models?

Excellent

Excellent question. The 3597 has all the features noted in ptownoddy's post except, of course, for the screen size. Add to that, the 3597's glass dual oriented screen and support for 3D Terrain and Buildings, plus HD traffic and I'm seeing more advantages to the 3597 than shortcomings.

New Models (for 2014)

I have a 3590LMT and it has about the same things that the 3597LMTHD has except for the HD. I am satisfy with it. The screen size is 5". Do a comparing on Garmin between the two and look at the different between the two, not much.

Free Space

It is interesting that there is such a variance in free space. I have a 2460LMT with current maps and 17 custom POIs. all the voices (even ones I can't speak - which is everything but English), 38 vehicles, and all the other stuff installed by Garmin. The unit has 8gb storage and free space of 2.4gb. I have an 8gb SD card installed with nothing on it.

New Models (for 2014)/No Additional 2014 Nuvi's?

I would still like to see the Garmin Nuvi 3592LM make it to the US, but it seems to be in other countries only, so far.

http://www.garmin.com.sg/m/buzz/sg/minisite/nuvi3592lm/

Why Not the U.S.?

I am still quite new to Garmin and this site, and would like to say thanks for all the sharing of info and help.

In regards to the 3592LM ... Why is it that such a feature rich unit is left to only part of the world? It seems to me that a unit like this would boost the image not to mention the bottom line of Garmin.

Yes,

Yes, but your 2460 doesn't have a gmapdem.img file that's over 1GB in size like models with 3D Terrain maps have, and if your comparing your Nuvi with a 3597 your voice files aren't 25 to 30Mb each like the TTS3 files on the devices that use "Real Directions".

Didn't Realize

Didn't realize that there was such a difference in file size. I am "assuming" that the newer models all come with SD slots. Why not load some of the files to the card? Is there a downgrade in performance by doing so?

I put a backup on my SD card.

That is a good question and I have no idea.

no traffic?

The unit seems good but doesn't seem to have live traffic or traffic via WiFi.. which makes this unit not of any interest to me..
