Which Garmin units DO NOT support.......

Is there a list of which Garmin units DO NOT support creating a route on the PC with Basecamp (or Mapsource) and sending it to the GPS?

use the garmin site

If you use the Garmin web site you can see which units allow multipoint routing (routes). You can always send a destination to the unit, but not all units allow multiple waypoints. They all allow at least one via or waypoint.

Route import models.

This Garmin FAQ https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?... shows the models that support route import. Anything not on the list does not do route import.

If you really need to compile a list of models that do not support route import, you could compare the models in the above link to the fairly comprehensive list of nuvi models in this post: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/37811.

One word of caution about Box Car's advice is to avoid the 23xx nuvi series. These units support multi-point routes and saved routes via Trip Planner but do not support route import from a PC.

It would seem that that Garmin FAQ is not up-to-date.

I just seen a post here recently about a 2455 not being able to import a route from the PC.

I will not buy a unit that cannot import multi-point routes from the Basecamp. The loss of simple stuff like this is mind-boggling.

They're both red but totally different. Importing a route made on a PC isn't the same as importing a route from BC or MS. The 2455 does interface with those two programs but there is a very good possibility it doesn't interface with the myriad of other available programs on a PC.

I personally don't remember a lot of traffic about the 2455 and handling routes built in Base Camp or MapSource. There has been a lot of traffic about not being able to transfer routes from Google or other online maps.

Also seems that there are

Also seems that there are more comments on the Garmin forums about this feature.

It seems that just because a unit supports Trip Planner does not mean that it will transfer routes to the PC and import routes from the PC.

I had been thinking of getting a used 1490 from a friend, or getting a newer unit, but now I'm not so sure I want to get the newer unit.

I just can't see myself entering multi-point routes on the GPS itself. So much easier to work on the PC.

Route transfer from PC

Box Car is correct. If you were thinking about route transfer from Google maps to a nuvi, you can't do it directly. There are third party plugins or applications that will convert the Google route to a Garmin compatible GPX file suitable for import, but Google does not provide this support directly.

Routing applications that will work for import to a nuvi are Mapquest, Microsoft Streets and Trips, Delorme Street Atlas USA, and of course Garmin's own Mapsource and Basecamp.

Route import.

As far as I know, the 23xx is the only Trip Planner capable series that does not support route import.

There certainly are users (including me) that prefer the legacy "Custom Routes" engine on the older units like the 1490 over Trip Planner. But that is mostly because of the way it operates, not because of any inability to import routes. Also, the Trip Planner has been improved on the newer models, so many of the complaints have been addressed.

You should be able to do this with any of the models listed in the link above. That said, you need to realize that when you transfer a route from a PC program to a nuvi, the only things that get transferred in the .GPX file are the start point, destination and any explicitly set via points. On import, the nuvi will recalculate the route using these points with the routing preferences you have set on the nuvi. So you don't necessarily get the exact same route that you created on the PC. In general, the more via points, the better your chances of preserving the route.

Some of the 2013 nuvi's will do import of routes with "shaping points" and will accept these route without recalculating.
