Extra POI Editor

After using this program successfully for a long time, I am now getting script errors and the program won't work. I have not changed any settings. I am using the latest version on my Garmin Nuvi 2595. Can anyone offer any help with this probem?

Custom "Where to" icons EPE

Quote:

Here's how to make your own POI icon in the Where-To. You need to make 2 icons......

I did all that and I didn´t work. Preferences > path to GPI file icons in EPE is set to the right directory.
I think it can be some problem with my .bmp files, made in Photoshop. Could someone please send me some .bmp file I can test ?
File is .GPX and Garmin Nuvi 1490.

Thanks.

PM me an address. I don't think I can send a .rar via PM.

Where to icons EPE

Thanks jgermann

But I need two similar icons to use with EPE .GPI file, in "Where to" menu in the Nuvi.
I read the instructions on how to make "Where to" custom icons to use with EPE but it didn´t work.

There should be a number of similar icons in the library.

Why do they have to be similar?

EPE Vs. Poi Edit

Just a quick question if I may.

Have any of you used POI EDIT Vs. Extra Poi Editor

http://www.poiedit.com/

I have used POI Edit for few years and it works as needed.

But always looking to check out something better out there.

Two icons

From the software author: "Here's how to make your own POI icon in the Where-To. You need to make 2 icons: one by default and one when the icon is pressed. They must have the same name as your .gpi file with the suffix 1 and 2. For example, if you want a poi file sonata.gpi, you need to make 2 bitmaps sonata1.bmp and sonata2.bmp. You must also set the path to find those 2 files in the Preferences."

I did all that and it did not work. I think maybe it is a problem with the .bmp files I made.

Ok

I have finally figured out where you are coming from. What you quote is from

I am still not sure what you are trying to accomplish. I think you are trying to create a .gpi file directly with EPE? Is that right?

EPE two icons

That´s right.

No, I have done that. I want to have a custom "Where to" icon after putting the GPI (made with EPE) in the Nuvi.
Thanks.

Don't think that is possible

IvanPereira wrote:

Thanks.

Hopefully, Turbocc is reading this thread and can respond, but I do not think that what you want is what Turbo was talking about.

I think you are hoping that you can have - on the screen that appears after you touch "Where To?" - a Custom Icon that represent one of the Custom POIs you have loaded.

From My perspective, this is near impossible, considering that I could load hundreds of such .gpi files into my unit. How would my 765T be able to arrange them in place of what now shows - which in my case is "Address", "Go Home", "Points of Interest", "Recently Found", "Favorites", "Intersection", etc.

Maybe someone else has experience with this. If so, help us out.

EPE versus POI Edit

In the past I have used both POI Edit and Extra POI Editor. IMO, EPE has significantly more features and is much more powerful than POI Edit.

However, I used POI Edit for a long time before I discovered EPE, and EPE did not have any extra features that seemed important enough *to me* to spend the time to get familiar with it, so I've continued to use POI Edit. If I had no previous background with another program, I think that I would choose EPE.

Looking at the recent discussions about EPE, I may just spend the time to get familiar with it after all, as I may want to use some of its extra capabilities in the future.

image icon

Is this what you want?

Go to "Where To" then "saved place" pic your saved place and click "i" then pick the "3 bars" upper left and pick "edit" from new window, than pick "Assign Photo" and choose you image. You can also change the symbol there instead of an image.

Doesn't change it in the Where to, though.

Thanks

Thanks for your input Tom,

I may try out EPE and see how it works.

I only use it to convert CSV files into OV2 in order to import those into my OEM VW RNS-510 Navigation, which I think is very basic feature needed and it works well with PoiEDIT.

Different sounds for different POIs

I want a GPI file (from .gpx file) made with EPE (Extra Poi Editor, 5.97) with different sounds (wave files) for different POIs.
I can´t get it. Only one sound plays.
Same result if I make two .gpx files and merge them.

What am I doing wrong ?
The sounds are ok, because they play if I have one POI with one wave file in separated GPI files.
Thanks.

Within the Editor you need to link each sound file to the associated POI. There is a space for the URL shown in the editor in the lower right quadrant.

Use "Links"

IvanPereira wrote:

What I do is have EPE "link" to the .wav files (and I also use .bmp files for Icons) for every point. Obviously, this takes a lot of work - but if you want to have individualized alerts, this is one way to do it.

Note that this "Link" technique overcomes the POI Loader requirement that the POI file name (eg .gpx), Alert sound file name (eg .wav), and Icon file name (eg .bmp) ALL have the same "character string" to the left of the extensions.

So - combine all of the POIs that you want to have individualized alert sounds into one file using EPE.

Double click each point to bring up the "POI Edit" dialog. About 2/3rds the way down the right side of this dialog - in the section called TourGuide Info - you will enter the Proximity for the alert and in the box next to Link you will "browse" to the location of the .wav file using Explorer and click Ok to have EPE enter the path to that .wav file.

Repeat for each POI.

Save the file in a folder

Run POI Loader and point to this folder

EDIT: whoops, Box Car beat me to it

You need to save as .gpx

.csv files do not have the granularity to get this done. Also if/when you make a change to the link url, make sure you check all the options in that drop down. EPE doesn't always remove the original one, so you may have two, and you'll only see the second: the one you want. Then you scratch your head wondering why the original is still alerting you. Ask me how I know that...

Thanks to you all. But.....there is always a "But".....

I did that, Box Car.

It works OK with Poi Loader, Jgermann.
Maybe I wasn´t clear enough.
In Poiloader is OK, but the same .GPX file in EPE does not work as expected. Only one sound plays.
Why I don´t want to use Poiloader ? Because I want at least one POI with "poi circles" which is not supported by Poiloader. Besides I love EPE.

Checked, CameraBob ! Still no success.

Thanks.

In EPE, as you probably know, there is a box on the right side of the line where the word "Link" appears that has the three choices
Browse
Open
Delete

When you bring up EPE with the multiple points you have entered, edit the first one. Then, click the "Open" button on the link and it should play the sound file associated the the first POI. Now, down below on the bottom line of the "POI Edit" dialog, click the "Next POI" button. Now click the "Open" button for that link and it should play the sound file for the second POI.

Assuming it is a different link from the first POI, because you indicated this was what you wanted, this should play a different sound file. You do not even have to close the media player.

IIRC

Check the web for instructions on how to create a TourGuide file. Several years ago the was one out of the UK that showed all the elements using (I believe) GeePeeX Edit or something close. That showed the necessary entries and I believe Turbo referenced it when building EPE.

That's what you are building, a special tour guide. You may have to save it in EPE as a GPI rather than a GPX. The standalone GPI would have to be loaded separately into your GPS and not through POI Loader as it's no longer a POI file.
