Forcing GTM60 frequency

In San Francisco Bay area, we have the HD weather on 3597 with GTM60.

In the south bay near my home, I get the weather information sporadically, mostly not.

Returning from a recent trip to San Francisco, I was pleasantly surprised that the weather information was present all the way back home. I did not have weather information at all on my way out though.

Near my home, the GTM60 locks on mostly to 98.5MHz, the strongest station, at power up. This station does not carry HD weather.

Digging a bit deeper, I found that, on my way back from SF, the GTM60 locked on to 96.5MHz which does carry HD weather information. This station has a weak signal near my home and usually do not get selected by the GTM60. Once locked on to a station, the GTM60 does not change its mind easily.

Only if I could force the GTM60 to lock on to this station? It turned out I can on the 3597.

This are the steps I used:

1. Open the developer’s menu. (~10 sec press, upper right corner of screen, volume menu)
2. Developer’s Info
3. Traffic Receiver Dashboard
4. Press the three-horizontal-bar (upper left corner) menu
5. Select HD Test
6. Set frequency, 96.5 (MHz) in my case.
7. Once satisfied with the frequency, leave it running in the HD-Test mode and exit the developer’s menu.

The settings persists. The GTM60 stays at this frequency even when the GPS is power cycled subsequently. Now I have weather information consistently on the 3597. smile

Note: The procedure does not work on my 2595. You can get into the HD Test mode with a slightly different procedure.

The manually-set frequency does not stick, however, once you exit the HD-Test mode. I assume it would not work either for other Nuvi’s released in previous years.
