Garmin Express not working. Can I switch to Map Updater mid-update?

I have a Nuvi 2555, which I'm trying to update via my Mac desktop. North America 2014.20 has been updating with Garmin Express for more than 15 hours now and has been stuck at 190 items of 191 for at least 10 hours. If I disconnect the GPS before it finishes, will I be able to use Map Updater to update the map or will I totally screw everything up? This is my first GPS and my first map update, so I have no idea what I'm doing, other than following the instructions on Garmin Express. I did at least do the backup before starting the update. (Also, where's the best place to download Map Updater?) Thanks!

Garmin

GarminMapUpdater for the MAC can be downloaded from:

http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.dmg

Since I'm not a MAC guy and I'm not sure at what point your at in the update (files are still downloading or the process of placing them on your Nuvi has started) I'll leave it to someone else to advise you on how to proceed.

Welcome to the forum and good for you that you've got a backup. grin

Garmin Express

With all the problem garmin express have I have NOT and never will use this junk software,

And most of the time is that as soon some new software are released people they rush to use them.Do some research first let other people screw up theyr Gps instead of yours.

Again Garmin Express as NOT enter my PC and it never will. but you want to cry later on go for it.

Download or Install?

If it's still downloading and stuck, go ahead and cancel.

Bingo! 'Driver 38' has been added to the growing list of intelligent people that will not use Garmin's P-O-S known as Gramin Express. Congrats...

I've never had a problem

I've never had a problem with the old map updater and was advised by Garmin to use it instead of the express on my Windows XP computer. I once tried the express and had many problems with it.

All These Replies

All these replies and only 2 actually addresses the OPs problem. I am really sure all these derogatory posts against GE help the OP get his problem fixed.

Come on guys, is this a forum to help users get their problems fixed or is it a venue for you to thump your chests and porcelain how smart you were to use another program.

Sheesh!

Agree

I agree with phranc

Updater

Blue Kitchen, Map updater can be had here,

PC Version

http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.exe

MAC version

http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.dmg

Go ahead and cancel your install. Filing that, Kill GE from the Activity Monitor. Unplug your GPS and restart it. If it won't restart, use the directions from Garmin to restore your backup. Then use Updater to install the Map Update.

not a mac

Being a pc not a mac guy, I'm not sure about the experience with mapupdater across platforms. For me MU works great.

Thanks!

Map Updater worked fine. My GPS is now updated. Thanks!

Now use Revo Uninstaller to get every bit of it off your computer. You want the free version.

Are you saying I should now remove Map Updater from my computer? It does take up almost 3500mb, so that would probably make sense. Thanks for your help!

Why?

Why is it good to uninstall Maop Updater?

No

Not Map Updater. It isn't actually installed. They are talking about Garmin Express. It's uninstaller doesn't do a good job of removing the program.

Agreed!

Well said.

Yes, to be safe, keep the downloaded GarminMapUpdater.exe on your computer for potential future use.

And yes, uninstall Garmin Express--and make sure in the future that Garmin doesn't reinstall GE--at least until they have it working well for all.

Thanks, everyone. One last question, please.

For now, anyway. Where do I find the Web Updater to not have to deal with Garmin Express again.

Thought I was the only one

I also tried Garmin Express and couldn't get it to work. Why can't companies test their products properly before releasing it into the wild?

Nüvi 255WT with nüMaps Lifetime North America born on 602117815 / Nüvi 3597LMTHD born on 805972514 / I love Friday’s except when I’m on holidays ~ canuk

I got that, thanks. But the Web Updater?

I mean to update the software for my Nuvi 2555, not the maps. Thanks.

Here we go

Garmin Express - Your Mileage May Vary

Just for a different perspective...

I have both Garmin Express and Updater installed on my Windows 8 (64-bit) laptop - recipe for disaster right? Not so much for me.

I originally installed Garmin Express before reading others input here and then installed updater as a backup incase I had trouble but it has worked great. I have 3 Nuvi's registered through the software and when I launch the program - without the units connected - the software gets all the updates. The other 2 units are my daughter's and dad's so when there are updates available I just take the laptop and plug in their units and install. I have done 3 map cycles this way and have had no issues.

Just to make it stranger still - I originally installed Garmin Express under Windows 7 (64-bit) and then upgraded (stupid me) to Windows 8. I have had other software issues with the new version but not with Garmin Express. YMMV - ALOT!

Map up dates for Garmin

Great site and thanks to phranc for the links to the map updater it worked great:)

I have a nuvi 2555 and the Garmin express would load half way and stall for hours and never install the maps. I was on the phone with Garmin for over 2 hours & thought we got it until the stall. Garmin techs never offered the map updater you posted so I thought I'd have to run with 3 year old maps. But low and behold this site and the info posted got me up to date!

Thanks again, now I'll have to look around and see what else I can learn smile

Welcome
