Nuvi 50 and custom route maps

Since the Nuvi 50LM (and probably others) does not support custom made route maps. And since they have now made Basecamp worse, and even more complicated for even simple tasks I have to wonder who is using it and for what. I still prefer to use Mapsource. But If I can't see routes than using it to load POIs seems a bit much. Has anyone found a use for these programs with the new Nuvis?

BTW: I should not have broken my old GPS as it supported custom loadable routes. So I got this one with Lifetime updates which was a major fault with the old out-of-date unit.

Thanks.

BaseCamp

BaseCamp supports route transfer to the new nuvi's that have the Trip Planner feature. The program works fine with both old and new nuvi's, but I do think Basecamp is targeted mainly at the sporting/handheld GPS market. As an example, you need BaseCamp to use Garmins BirdsEye satellite imagery maps. These are very useful for hiking, trail riding, geocaching, etc.

Yes, but doesn't it seem

Yes, but doesn't it seem that creating routes on Basecamp with trip planner is a LOT more difficult than Mapsource? I have used MS for a couple of years and it's not just the different procedures involved, but the process just seems overly complicated now.

And you are probably right in that it is slanted towards the hiking crowd. But still.... this is what Garmin has developed to replace MS.

At any rate, with the Nuvi 50 I now have to manually go from waypoint (i.e. favorites) to waypoint as a route now. Something I need to address in the next purchase of a GPS unit.

Thanks for your input.
