nuvi 34xx/35xx firmware update v8.10 released

Note:

To be able to backdate the firmware if the new version is not to your liking, the previous firmware update file (GUPDATE.GCD) is stored in the .System folder on the nuvi drive. You'll have to enable showing of hidden & system files on your PC to access the file to back it up.

Thanks Serg. If I recall correctly you just drop the gcd downloaded file on the Nuvi in Windows Explorer, correct?

might be only for the 34xx series, but mine did update through Garmin Express.
Just checked, it loaded nuvi35xx_GCDFile__810.gcd
found it under SW-006-B1258-00-8.10 in ProgramData/garmin

Well, I tried it last night through Garmin Express to update my 3597 and there was no update available.
I searched internet for any firmware update for 35xx, all I found was Firmware version 3.8. So I am not sure. I will wait till Garmin Express updates it.

Although the 8.10 update STILL doesn't appear as available for the 35xx using either Garmin Express or Webupdater, it is available as a direct download. See:

These Version Numbers

don't make sense. My 3597's current version is 3.80. It really jumps to 8.10?

When is 35xx not 35x7?

UZA_Dave wrote:

It may be that Garmin does not consider the 3597 to be one of the 35xx series but rather a 35x7 and 35x8 model.

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=5967

Confusing indeed. And if 3.80 is the current version for the 35x7 and 35x8 series, trying to force an 8.10 update may not work or may be dangerous. To be safe, for now I'll suggest that if WebUpdater or Garmin Express don't offer the update, then wait rather than act.

Agreed

I tried Garmin Express, Web Updater, and MyGarmin. All three say my software is up to day with 3.80.

8.10 Update

I have a Nuvi 3590. Last evening I used Garmin Express V 2.3.12 to download V8.10 firmware. It downloaded and installed with zero problems.

Went on a 30 mile drive today and didn't notice any difference in the performance of my GPS. Despite the claim of POI improvements, many of my personal ones are so dim, they are hardly visible. I was hoping that would be fixed.

Today I see that V 2.3.14 of GE is available.

Updated my 2495 successfully

My 2495 updated successfully without difficulty through WebUpdater.

This updating process behaves differently than the previous updates. The firmware is installed on the 2495 automatically, right after it is downloaded and while the 2495 is still connected to the computer. Previouslcoy, the installation happens after the Nuvi is disconnected and rebooted.

I also downloaded some traffic related updates (text, Type 3 firmware, etc.)
While connected to the GTM60 cord and booted up the first time, the 2495 went through the initial scan of the FM stations and locked on to the one that has been most reliable (98.5 MHz) without a hitch.

The 2495 then asked that it need to reboot for some newly downloaded content to work properly. Rebooted and everything appears to be still in order.

Keeps fingers crossed.

It is also for the 24X5/25x5 series too. See Mattb's post earlier. I updated my 2495 too. No issues.

Upto this point, the firmware versions for the 24X5/25X5 and the 34xx/35xx series are synchronized, with the same features and version numbers.

Bluetooth connectivity seems improved with 8.10 on 3490

Since updating to 8.10 I have paired my phone via Bluetooth with the GPS several times and it seems to work ok now. In the past this used to be buggy and would cause problems with ecoRoute HD which also links to the GPS via Bluetooth. So far I have not noticed any other negative side effects.

Just curious

has anyone attempted to apply this to their 3597? I downloaded the .GCD file but don't have the nerve to try it.

My earlier thoughts still make sense to me

I am pretty sure the 35xx does not apply to the 3597. The 7 is for higher end models. Forcing a firmware update that Garmin isn't offering its usual way is just looking for trouble.

If you have a spare 3597 lying around, or your don't think you will need the unit for a few months, then go right ahead. I am right behind you.

That's correct. Going to the changelog pages I linked to in the original post specifically states 34xx & 35xx. This is why I posted the model numbers as I did. If something is wrong, I blame Garmin! mrgreen

Traffic Icon Fixed?

Did this update fix the "Always Green Traffic Icon" issue by any chance? This is the issue where the icon is green once the traffic receiver is plugged and stays that way even if you are no longer receiving a good signal, and therefore traffic updates. (or lost it HOURS ago). It used to turn gray when this happened. Old timers here will remember we lost this handy feature in one of the early firmware updates for the 25xx and 35xx series.

One can always hope! rolleyes

I'll keep my eye on it this weekend. I used it last weekend under v8.10 and noticed the same "Searching for service/signal/whatever" with the traffic signal but didn't pay attention to the icon color. My gut feeling is that it has NOT been corrected/altered by Garmin since their fixing of one thing could break multiple other things. rolleyes

That's what's frustrating...

This was a feature that worked fine, but was broken by one of their previous "fixes". They have never bothered to fix it despite many reports and talks with the support folks. (By ME)
