Garmin HUD review

Here is a review of the new Garmin HUD and a not so great video of the unit in action.

I'll be sticking with my 2595LMT

Nice idea but a lot of messing around to get the HUD nav display

It looks similar to what info I see in the HUD windshield display with my GM factory nav but has less nav info displayed.

I love having the ability to see the nav info in the windshield because you do not have to take your eyes off the road ahead for even a second to be able to see the info. It has really spoiled me and it is indispensable in heavy rush hour traffic conditions in a strange city area.

This is a drawing from my GM owner's manual showing the HUD display and what each item in the display is. When the nav info is not showing the display reverts to normal driving speed, tach, turn signal and warnings if any.

Still waiting--

I still think this is the killer app for Google Glass, or a similar display-only device, integration with vehicle and NAV systems.

.

I'll stick with visible map based GPS units.

I would think this might

I would think this might prove to be distracting though, especially if it was in the line of sight of some drivers.

Cool, but....

A neat concept, but not really executed all that well. Aside from the cost, the bulky power cord, and fixed screen images, the fact that it will not connect with a Garmin GPS unit is a real killer.

Better video

I like the idea but .....

This is generation one, I'm sure it will improve in time.

Alternative...

I just stick my GPS in front of instrument panel blocking only speedometer and tachometer, still with clear view to fuel and temperature gauges. It works out great and I check check on GPS without taking my eyes off the road.

Not Ready for Prime Time

Until more nav data is displayed and the technology improves, this is all sizzle and no steak. Ever try using a HUD while traveling into the sun on abright day while wearing sunglasses?

I will keep my traditional unit for now.

Almost as bad as a factory

Almost as bad as a factory installed unit...

Not really

So, you have to buy the hud unit, have a smart phone, buy an app for the smart phone, then plug the hud unit in and for a really long journey, plug the smart phone in too, mmm, I think I will stick with my standalone units.

The HUD is not ready for prime time! Just saying.
